She served as a professor with Baruch College prior to her retirement in 2008. Since then, Dr. Hoffman has been recognized as a professor emeritus with the institution. Although she is now retired, Dr. Hoffman continues to maintain involvement with the American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Chemical Society and Sigma Xi.
Dr. Hoffman began a scientific career upon graduating from Queens College with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry in 1959. She went on to attend New York University, where she received a Master of Science in 1967 and PhD in Organic Chemistry in 1970. During the next few years, she completed a postdoctoral fellowship with the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
From 1973 to 1977, Dr. Hoffman served as a research associate with Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center. She transitioned into the field of education when she joined Baruch College as an assistant professor in 1977. Within five years, Dr. Hoffman was promoted to the position of professor. During this time, she worked as a member of the education committee with the United Nations International School. From 1995 to 1998, Dr. Hoffman was recognized as a chair of the department of natural sciences with Baruch College.
For more than 40 years, Dr. Hoffman has contributed articles to professional journals pertaining to her areas of expertise. In addition, she serves as a reviewer of grant proposals for the National Institutes of Health.
In recognition of her commitment to scientific research, Dr. Hoffman has been named the recipient of numerous awards, including the Moore Award from the American Society of Neuropathologists and Founders Day Award from New York University. She most recently received the 112th Precinct Community Council Award in 1993. In addition, Dr. Hoffman has been featured in a wide range of honors publications, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the East and Who's Who of American Women.
