Mr. Polaha was appointed to the bench by Governor Kenny Guinn in March 1999, and has served as a judge on the Second Judicial District Court in Nevada ever since. His present term ends in January 2021. Along with his judicial duties in the Second Judicial Circuit, Mr. Polaha is also a Commissioner on the Nevada Judicial Discipline Commission having been appointed to the Commission by the Nevada Supreme Court in 2002. Prior to his appointment as a judge, Mr. Polaha was an "AV" rated trial lawyer, having spent 31 years as a litigator with over 125 jury trials. He was listed annually in the Best Lawyers in America publication since 1987 in the category of criminal defense and was a Fellow with the American Board of Criminal Lawyers since his induction in 1981.
Previously an adjunct professor of criminal law at Old College School of Law, and a faculty member at the National Judicial College and with the National Business Institute, and a Master in the Inns of Court, Mr. Polaha hopes to begin teaching again in the near future and do some consulting work in retirement. He belonged to many professional organizations both at the state and national level and has served on many boards of non-profit organizations, including the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Families United and several local homeless-assist organizations.
Mr. Polaha served in the U.S. Air Force from 1956-1960 and served in the security service having learned Russian while at Syracuse University with the Air Force Institute. He completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Nevada and obtained his Juris Doctorate degree from the National Law Center of George Washington University in 1968. The recipient of an Achievement Award for Young Lawyers from ABA, Mr. Polaha served as president of the Young Lawyers Club of Northern Nevada, as Chief Judge of the Second Judicial District, and as President of the Nevada District Judges Association. He was cited in Who's Who in the West, Who's Who in American Law, Who's Who of Emerging Leaders of America, and the International Who's Who of Contemporary Achievement. Mr. Polaha is married to Esther Eben Polaha for 43 years, and has 4 sons and 6 grandsons.
