Initially becoming involved in his profession due to a strong interest in hydraulic mechanism, Dr. Akaiwa is now responsible for designing products of power steering gears and pressure control valves. With more than 50 years in his field, he worked as a technical engineer for the production of car motor parts with Kasai Industry Company, Ltd. beginning in 1967, as a service engineer of hydraulic devices with Denison Hydraulics of Japan Company, Ltd. and, for much of his career, as a designer and developer of hydraulic devices with Atsugi Motor Parts Company, Ltd.
Born in Japan, he majored and took courses in mechanical engineering at Sophia University in 1967. Dr. Akaiwa also completed an MS in Advanced Mechanical Engineering at the University of Birmingham in 1994, followed by a PhD in Electrorheological Fluids at the University of Liverpool in 1998. He is licensed in Amateur Radiotelegraphy and holds a First Grade Skill Certificate for Examination of Hydraulic Devices Alignment. He also holds a Second Grade Test in Practical English license from the Japanese Ministry of Education, conducted by the Society for Testing English Proficiency (STEP) in 1980. Dr. Akaiwa also holds an Aviation Shop-Floor Inspection license concerning one division of a control device for a gas turbine engine, as well an Aviation Shop-Floor Inspection license concerning another division of landing gear, both approved by the Japanese Ministry of International Trade and Industry in 1983.
From 1993 to 1998, he studied at English University and is now engaged in translating patents. He contracted with the Japan Patent Information Organization (JPIO), a subsidiary of the Japan Patent Office, and he receives translation work to complete every week. Sometimes, Dr. Akaiwa translates abstracts of Japanese patents into abstracts of English patents for foreign country readers – and sometimes he translates and creates Japanese summaries as short as 600 to 1,000 characters.
Dr. Akaiwa is a longtime member of the Institute of Electrostatics Japan and the Japan Fluid Power System Society. Contributing multiple articles to scholarly journals in his area of expertise, he enjoys traveling and weight training in his free time.
