Prior to this appointment, he was a senior associate at Davis & Shank, P.C., from 1997 to 1999, an associate attorney at O'Quinn and Laminack, P.C., from 1992 to 1997, and a paralegal at O'Quinn, Kerensky, McAninch & Laminack from 1988 to 1992. Mr. Michaels began his career as a court coordinator for the Office of the Harris County District Clerk from 1985 to 1988.
Before embarking on his professional path, Mr. Michaels pursued an education at the University of Houston, earning a Bachelor of Science in government in 1987. He concluded his education at the South Texas College of Law Houston in 1992, graduating with a Doctor of Jurisprudence. Following these accomplishments, Mr. Michaels was qualified as a dispute mediator by the Texas Alternative Dispute Resolution Procedures Act.
Licensed to practice law by the State Bar of Texas in 1992, Mr. Michaels has been admitted to practice by the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, the Supreme Court of the United States and the Houston Bar Association. Likewise, he has practiced in front of the U.S. District Courts for the Northern and Eastern Districts of Texas. In 1996, Mr. Michaels was admitted to practice by the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas.
Beyond his efforts within the field, Mr. Michaels has participated in numerous endeavors outside of his professional circles. In 1983, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving until his honorable discharge in 1985. An attorney for veteran's clinics with the Katy Bar Association in 2012, he has been an invited speaker at presentations for the Services Cooperative Association, the China Symposium of the International Trade Center of Houston, and the Houston Chapter of the American Institute of Graphic Arts. A third degree member of Memorial Council No. 6527 with the Knights of Columbus, he contributed to the Houston Christian High School as vice president of the Fine Arts Council and as a 12th grade representative for the Campus Advisory Team from 2005 to 2006. Mr. Michaels has also held the positions of chapter director of the Sigma Pi Fraternity at Texas A&M University from 2006 to 2010 and both director and president of Harris County Municipal Utility District 238 from 1989 to 2003.
In addition to his primary trade, Mr. Michaels remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to his areas of expertise. He has maintained involvement with the Houston Bar Association as the chair of the Law Practice Management Committee in 2017, on the Administration of Justice Committee from 2012 to 2016, secretary of the Law Practice Management Committee in 2015, on the Professionalism Committee from 2012 to 2013, and on the Fee Dispute Committee from 2003 to 2007. The Texas Governor for the New Lawyers Division of the American Association for Justice from 1994 to 1997, Mr. Michaels is a member of the Texas Mediator Credentialing Association, National Arbitration and Mediation, the Texas Bar Foundation, and the Pro Bono College with the State Bar of Texas from 2011 to 2014.
In light of his exceptional undertakings, Mr. Michaels has accrued several accolades and honors throughout his impressive career.
