Biology professor and newly appointed department chairman at Palm Beach State College in West Palm Beach, FL, Mr. Liang currently teaches two courses on campus, Principles of Biology and Microbiology. Teaching at the college for 12 years, he accepted his chair position in 2016. He has also been a member of the campus sustainability committee for the past 11 years. Formerly spending the first half of his career in research before entering academia, he spent many years as a biological scientist at the University of Florida, as a research assistant at Michigan State University and as a seed pathologist at the Beijing Vegetable Research Center. Additionally, he spent two years as a visiting scientist at the Seed Pathologist Institute in Copenhagen, Demark, during the mid-1980s.
Responsible for discovering a new fungal subspecies and cloned hrp genes from P. syringae pv. morsprunorum, Mr. Liang was also the first person to develop the idea of a comprehensive evaluation of seed health in the world, a concept that was published on the front page of "Seed Science and Technology" in 1993. During his tenure at Palm Beach State College, Mr. Liang assisted to develop a very successful project on the Everglades campus to control rodents, which later resulted in a Bravo Award for his contributions. He has also since helped establish a new major in sugar cane processing technology.
An associate of the Association of Florida Colleges who has contributed multiple articles to scholarly publications in his field, Mr. Liang has held a Bachelor of Science in plant pathology from Xinjiang Agricultural University in China since 1982 and a Master of Science in botany and plant pathology from Michigan State University since 1991. He has been certified in seed pathology through the Danish Government Institute of Seed Pathology since 1986.
The recipient of several grants, including one from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Mr. Liang also received a Bravo Award from Palm Beach State College in 2007 and has been named One of the Outstanding Intellectuals of the 21st Century in 2014. Mr. Liang has been cited in every edition of Who's Who in America since 2008 and every edition of Who's Who in the World since 2009. Married to Amy Xiao with two children, he enjoys playing the guitar, skiing and fishing.
