Dr. Mazumdar received her bachelor's and master's degrees in statistics from the University of Calcutta, India and her doctoral degree in 1967 in statistics from Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, USA. She joined as a faculty member in the Department of Biostatistics, and the Graduate School of Public Health, University of Pittsburgh. With over 40 years of professional expertise, Dr. Mazumdar retired as a Professor Emeritus of the University of Pittsburgh in 2013. She also held a secondary Professorship in University of Pittsburgh Medical School. During her long tenure, she was a core faculty in the masters and doctoral teaching programs and served as advisor of doctoral students, mentored postdoctoral fellows and junior faculty members in the departments of biostatistics and psychiatry. Twenty six students received doctoral degrees under her tutelage. She worked extensively in areas of occupational and environmental health with independent research funding from the US government and private research institutions. Her most recent research interest was in psychiatry and health services. She was involved in National Institute of Health (NIH) funded research projects, program projects and advanced centers of intervention and services research. She was the director of an NIH funded pre-doctoral training program in biostatistics and psychiatry. She has more than 200 peer-reviewed publications encompassing both theory and applications of statistics. She has served on the advisory board of the US Federal and Drug Administration (FDA), review panels of NIH and National Cancer Society (NCS). She had presentations in many national and international conferences and workshops. Her professional affiliations included the International Biometric Society, the Public Health Association, and the American Statistical Association. She is an elected fellow of the American Statistical Association (ASA), was named to the Delta Omega Public Health Honor Society, received the award of Statistician of the Year from the Pittsburgh Chapter of the ASA, and an award for Outstanding Teacher from the Graduate School of Public Health, University of Pittsburgh.
