Dr. Johnson is the director of the University of Michigan Lansing Service Center, Office of the VP for Government Relations, and is an adjunct professor at Lansing Community College. Working for U-M for more than 25 years, she was also chief of staff to State Representative Hansen Clarke, and a legislative liaison for Governor James J. Blanchard to the House and Senate. Mr. Blanchard played a major role in Dr. Johnson's success over the years. Dr. Johnson has served as the vice president for Information Movers, Inc., has been a speaker and workshop presenter in her field, and is the owner of Verondee' Ventures LLC in East Lansing. She also helped established the Michigan Wolverine Caucus Forum Series at the University of Michigan. Furthermore, she was active as a newspaper columnist for "Library Lines" and has authored numerous manuals on marketing government publications, cost effective methods and community information needs. Early in her career Dr. Johnson was director of information and government services within the State Library of Michigan in 1987, and she served as a government relations specialist for two years. Previously, Dr. Johnson served as the head community librarian and children's librarian at the Inkster, MI, branch of the Wayne Oakland Library Federation.
Locally involved as an appointee on the Selective Service Board in Michigan since 2002, Dr. Johnson is also a candidate for Precinct Delegate, East Lansing, MI, Ingham County, was a member of the East Lansing Planning Commission, 1995-2002, was chairman of the workshop committee for the Inkster International Friendship Force Exchange in 1981 and a member of the Inkster Cable TV Task Force. Dr. Johnson is also a longtime member of several professional organizations. She is a member of the National Education Association, Michigan Education Association, and was a member of the American Library Association, where she served in a number of capacities.
Responsible for establishing a nursing scholarship in her mother's honor, the Alberta Dixon Wilkerson Scholarship for Nurses, at the Wayne State University College of Nursing in 2005, Dr. Johnson also established an internship in her own name at the University of Michigan School of Information in 2015, the Dr. Veronica Wilkerson Johnson Diversity Internship. Planning to publish a book that she is currently writing to help motivate people in STEM careers, she aspires to work in educational outreach in the near future as well.
The recipient of a Young Librarian of the Year Award in 1982, Dr. Johnson was a University of Michigan School of Information fellow from 1976 to 1977. She has held a Bachelor of Arts in communications and journalism from Wayne State University since 1975, a Master of Arts in Information from the University of Michigan since 1977, and a Doctor of Education from Ferris State University since 2015. Showcased in several editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the World, Who's Who of American Women and Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America, Dr. Johnson has long been married to her husband Melvin Lee Johnson, and she has three children and a grandson.
