Dr. Burhop began his career as a research assistant in the department of veterinary science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he was also a research specialist in the department of preventative medicine. He later served as a postdoctoral fellow at Albany Medical College in New York before joining the Baxter Healthcare Corporation and advancing to the position of global scientific lead. His research includes assessing the biocompatibility of materials and compounds, modified hemoglobin solutions and other blood substitute solutions, as well as wound healing and regenerative medicine. He has contributed 43 articles, several book chapters and 77 abstracts to professional journals.
In addition to the American Physiological Society, Dr. Burhop is affiliated with the New York Academy of Sciences, the American Burn Association, the American Heart Association, the Association for the Advancement of Wound Care, the Wound Healing Society, the International Society of Oxygen Transport to Tissue, the American Society of Hematology, the National Stroke Association, and the Society of Critical Care Medicine. He holds a Master of Science and a Doctor of Philosophy in cardiopulmonary pathophysiology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
