Colonel Donald Alsbro (Ret) celebrates 45 years of expertise in health education and 32 years in the military. He is a retired Colonel of the U.S. Army. In 1963 he received a Bachelor of Arts in Education from Western Michigan University where he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Infantry Branch. In his thirty two years of military service he transferred from Infantry, to Adjutant General and then to Medical Service Corp. He holds a Master of Arts from Roosevelt University, a Master of Science from Eastern Michigan University, a Specialist in Education from Western Michigan University and a doctorate of Education from Wayne State University. He is a graduate of many military schools including Command and General Staff College, Jungle Warfare, and Adjutant General Career Course. He has also been a Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) since Oct 1991.
Professionally, Dr. Alsbro served as a professor of health and physical education at Lake Michigan College for twenty one years. With another staff member Don was instrumental in developing a required college course: "Healthful Living." He also was athletic director at LMC for nine years. While teaching at Lake Michigan College, he developed a national worksite wellness program called "Dump Your Plump" which has been integrated into communities, schools, hospitals and businesses around the United States and the world in an effort to promote exercise, healthy eating, and wellness. There have been over 500 DYP contests worldwide. DYP has sponsored ten "DYP Wellness Cruises." Carnival ships changed their menus to accommodate as many as 300 vegetarians on these cruises.
As a dedicated advocate for health, wellness, patriotism and education, Col. Alsbro founded Lest We Forget (LWF) in 2006. LWF is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting patriotism in communities and classrooms throughout the United States. Their motto is "we brighten the future by illuminating the past." Since LWF's inception, Col. Alsbro and his fellow veterans have organized WWII and Vietnam re-enactments, patriotic concerts, and parades. LWF and Lake Michigan College has taught semester courses on the Civil War, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm and the current military situation. LWF has published four books with over 200 local veterans' stories. LWF has produced a "Display of Freedom" that travels to schools and public libraries throughout Southwest Michigan. This display fills a large trailer and consists of uniforms, pictures, and videos. In the video area, LWF in partnership with the Berrien County Intermediate School District, has produced an award-winning video series documenting the Civil War, WWII, Korean War, and the Vietnam War. LWF has over 300 members and many of the members are not veterans, but individuals hoping to keep this great nation free!
For his military, professional, and community leadership achievements, Dr. Alsbro has been awarded the Liberty Bell Award from the Berrien County Bar Association and the Margaret B. Upton Volunteer Leadership Award. He also was named to Lake Michigan College's Athletic Hall of Fame and to Western Michigan University's ROTC Hall of Fame.
