With more than 30 years of professional experience, Ms. Moran has been the Michael J. Connell Distinguished Professor of Law at the School of Law at the University of California, Los Angeles since 2010. She also served as dean of the law school from 2010 to 2015, becoming the first Latina to hold that position at a top twenty law school. Before coming to UCLA, Ms. Moran was the Robert D. and Leslie-Kay Raven professor of law at the University of California, Berkeley, a title that she held from 1998 to 2010. Between 2008 and 2010, she was a founding faculty member at the University of California, Irvine School of Law, which has since become one of the top-ranked law schools in the country. Ms. Moran began her career as a professor with the School of Law at the University of California, Berkeley in 1983. Earlier in her career, she worked as an associate with the San Francisco law firm of Heller, Ehrman, White & McAuliffe from 1982 to 1983, and she was a law clerk for Chief Judge Wilfred Feinberg of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit from 1981 to 1982.
Ms. Moran graduated from Stanford University, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in psychology with honors and with distinction in 1978. There, she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa her junior year. As the date of her college graduation neared, Ms. Moran was struggling to decide between a career in psychology or in law. Research that she did with two psychology professors helped her to make up her mind. That research looked at the impact that hiring guidelines in the construction industry had on women. Without guidelines, few women applied for the jobs; with guidelines, many more did. Based in part on these findings, the Department of Labor adopted guidelines for women, and soon thereafter, Ms. Moran saw a woman in a hard hat as her family drove by a roadside highway project. Realizing that the law was a powerful tool for change, she subsequently studied law at Yale University, where she earned a Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1981. While there, she was an Editor of the Yale Law Journal and runner-up in the Harlan Fiske Stone Moot Court Prize Competition.
Reflecting the values that her parents, Thomas and Josephine Moran, taught her throughout her life, Ms. Moran has dedicated her career to working for social change. She has published extensively on issues related to equal educational opportunity as well as challenges facing the Latino community. Her academic contributions have been recognized through her selection for two endowed chairs at prestigious universities as well as her election to the Presidency of the Association of American Law Schools in 2009. Over the years, she has tried to touch the lives of her students and to mentor them as they develop their own professional identities. As a result, she was particularly pleased to receive a Distinguished Teaching Award from the University of California at Berkeley in recognition of her efforts. Ms. Moran advises her students and other prospective lawyers to consider carefully where they would like to leave their mark, to reach out to those already in the field for advice, and to remain open and resilient by continually considering ways to grow and improve. In her free time, Ms. Moran enjoys walking, reading, going to the theater, and listening to music.
