With more than 55 years of experience to her credit, Dr. Kopenhaver has worked at Florida International University in such capacities as executive director of the Lillian Lodge Kopenhaver Center for the Advancement of Women in Communication since 2013, dean emeritus at the School of Communication + Journalism since 2012, and both professor and associate dean at the School of Communication + Journalism since 1991. Prior to these appointments, she held multiple positions in the School of Communication + Journalism at Florida International University, including as dean from 2004 to 2011, interim dean from 2003 to 2004, founding associate dean from 1991 to 2003, and associate director from 1988 to 1991. Additionally, Dr. Kopenhaver excelled at the School of Communication + Journalism at Florida International University as associate chair of the department of communication from 1983 to 1988, the public relations sequence coordinator from 1983 to 1986, and acting chair of the department of communication from 1981 to 1983.

Previously, Dr. Kopenhaver served Florida International University as an associate professor in the department of communication from 1983 to 1988, adjunct assistant professor in the department of communication from 1980 to 1981, director of information services and news bureau from 1978 to 1981, director of special events from 1978 to 1981, assistant vice president for student affairs from 1977 to 1978, and the director of student activities from 1973 to 1977. From 1971 to 1973, she was the co-director of the journalism program and an assistant professor of journalism at Miami Dade Community College. During this time, she was tenured as an assistant professor of journalism at Ocean County College from 1966 to 1997. Dr. Kopenhaver began her career as a teacher of English and journalism at Brick Township High School from 1962 to 1967.

Before embarking on her professional path, Dr. Kopenhaver pursued an education at Rowan University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in English and journalism, summa cum laude, in 1962. She continued her academic efforts with a Master of Arts from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1967. She concluded her studies at Nova Southeastern University in 1980, graduating with a Doctor of Education in communication. Following these accomplishments, Dr. Kopenhaver was certified as an English and journalism teacher in New Jersey and Florida.

Dr. Kopenhaver has participated in numerous other endeavors. She contributed to the Student Press Law Center from 1976 to 2005, during which time she held such titles as treasurer, vice president, president, public relations director, finance council member, and on the corporate board. Dr. Kopenhaver has held the role of national consultant in journalism education for such impressive institutions as the University of Michigan, the University of Iowa, the National Newspaper Association, Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey and the University of Cincinnati, among others.

Dr. Kopenhaver found success with her written works as well, having been the associate editor of College Media Review since 1982, and associate editor of FIU Hospitality Review from 1983 to 2005. The co-author of "College Media Advising: Ethics and Responsibilities, Fourth Edition" in 2003, she authored "Code of Ethics for Advisers, Revised" in 1992, "Code of Professional Standards for Advisers, Revised" in 1983, and "Code of Ethics for Advisers" in 1983. She has been a book manuscript reviewer for Pearson Education, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, and Prentice Hall, Inc. Dr. Kopenhaver additionally reviewed the manuscripts for Communication Law and Policy from 2001 to 2004 and in 2014, and the Public Relations Research Journal from 1990 to 1994. She is also the author of more than 100 articles in scholarly and professional journals.

Likewise, Dr. Kopenhaver was on the editorial board for the Public Relations Research Annual in 1988 and 1994, the editorial board for the Student Press Law Center Report from 1983 to 1985, and on the editorial advisory board for the Public Relations Research Journal from 1990 to 1994. She also held the roles of associate editor, co-founder, and journalist for the Community College Journalist from 1972 to 1975. From 1962 to 1968, she worked at the Ocean County Daily Observer as a lifestyle editor and reporter. A director of national conventions around the globe, Dr. Kopenhaver has also contributed as an organizer, moderator and presenter in her field.

Dr. Kopenhaver remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to her areas of expertise. Between 1972 and 2017, she maintained involvement with the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication in multiple committees, as chair of several committees and councils, on the board of directors from 2010 to 2013, and as president from 1998 to 1999. Dr. Kopenhaver was also active with the Association of Schools of Journalism and Mass Communication as chair of the secondary education committee from 2007 to 2010, on the secondary education committee from 2006 to 2009, and on the nomination and elections committee from 2005 to 2006.

Serving as chair and member on multiple committees between 1971 and 2006, Dr. Kopenhaver was additionally involved with the College Media Association as national convention chair from 1974 to 2001, vice president from 1970 to 1975, vice president for public affairs from 1980 to 1983, and president from 1975 to 1979. She has been a member of Kappa Tau Alpha since 1993, the Columbia Scholastic Press Advisers Association since 1971, and as a National Workshop Leader since 1977. She has been further associated with the Community College Journalism Association as president-elect, national executive secretary, east states representative, and articulation chair from 1970 to 1971. On the Council of Communications Associations from 1998 to 2000, Dr. Kopenhaver was also a member of the National Communication Association, the Miami International Press Club, the Society of Professional Journalists, the Journalism Education Association, the Greater Miami Society of Professional Journalists, the American Association of Community Colleges, and the Association for Women in Communications.

In light of her exceptional undertakings, Dr. Kopenhaver has accrued several accolades throughout her impressive career. Honored as an Ignite Torchbearer by Florida International University in 2014, she obtained a number of awards from FIU, including a Distinguished University Service Medallion in 2011, a Top Scholar Award from the Office of the Provost in 2010, and a Outstanding Achievement Performance Award in 1990. She has garnered multiple awards from the College Media Association, such as the Advisers Service Achievement Award in 1979, the Distinguished Service Award in 1987, the Outstanding Service Award in 2001, the Ron E. Spielberger Service Award in 2008, and the Presidential Citation for Meritorious Service from 1984 to 1986 and in 1993. Dr. Kopenhaver has also been cited as a Charter Honoree of the Hall of Fame of the College Media Association in 1994 and the Outstanding Newspaper Adviser in the United States of College Media Advisers in 1971.

Dr. Kopenhaver has attained a number of decorations from the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication, such as the Distinguished Service Award from the Newspaper Division in 1990 and 2000, a Distinguished Leadership Award in 2001, and as an Honors Lecturer for the Scholastic Journalism Division in 2000. From the Society of Professional Journalists, she received a Citation in 1985, the Region 3 Director's Award in 1986, the Wells Memorial Key Award in 1987, and the Larry Strum Award in 1999. Moreover, she procured the Joseph M. Murphy Award for Outstanding Service from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association in 2003, the 75th Anniversary Citation from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association in 2000, a Gold Key Award from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association in 1980, the Gold Medallion Award from the Florida Scholastic Press Association in 1986, and the Pioneer Award from the National Scholastic Press Association in 1983. Dr. Kopenhaver accepted the Outstanding Woman in Journalism and Mass Communication Education Award in 2009 from the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication, and the Torch Award from the Florida International University Alumni Association in 2000 as Outstanding Faculty Member.

Dr. Kopenhaver has been presented with the Positive Living Award in Philanthropy from the South Florida Alliance on Aging in 2014, the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Rowan University in 2005, the Outstanding Faculty Service Award from the FIU Foundation, Inc., in 1996, the National Teaching Award in Newspaper Graphics and Design from Poynter Institute for Media Studies in 1987, and the Woman of Achievement Award from the Business and Professional Woman's Club of Point Pleasant, NJ, in 1970. She was recognized in the Hall of Fame of the Community College Journalism Association in 1994, with an Elihu Stout Plaque for Distinguished Achievement in Journalism from Vincennes University in 1973, among the 30 Outstanding Journalism Teachers in the United States by The Dow Jones News Fund in 1969, and the National Outstanding Achievement as Journalism Teacher and Adviser in the Special Awards Competition from the Dow Jones News Fund in 1964, 1965, and 1967. She was also honored as a Gannett Foundation and Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication fellow of the University of Missouri in 1991, a fellow in journalism of the Dow Jones News Fund with the University of Texas at Austin in 1968, and a fellow in journalism of the The Dow Jones News Fund with the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1963. Dr. Kopenhaver was selected for inclusion in many editions of Who's Who in Finance and Industry, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the Media and Communication, Who's Who in the South and Southwest and Who's Who of American Women.
