Dr. Kelly is currently retired and is active in her church and community. She retired as an associate professor of nursing at Emory University in 2001. Prior to this appointment, she held numerous positions with the University of Cincinnati, including associate professor from 1989 to 1993, assistant professor from 1963 to 1989, and instructor from 1980 to 1989. She was also an instructor for Thomas More College from 1977 to 1980. She served as a staff nurse for Bethesda North Hospital from 1972 to 1977. Dr. Kelly began her career in the U.S. as an assistant head nurse for Cornell Medical Center, NYC from 1961 to 1964. Before coming to the states she earned a RGN, Registered General Nurse at the Eastern District Hospital, Glasgow, Scotland where she was also awarded the Gold Medal. She went on to become a certified midwife at the North Middlesex Hospital, London, England.
Dr. Kelly began her nursing education at the University of Cincinnati, earning a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1976. She continued with a Master of Science in Nursing at Wright State University in 1979. She concluded her higher education studies with a PhD in Higher Education in 1987 at Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio.
Dr. Kelly's research and writing has been widely published by professional nursing journals both national and international. These include the Journal of Advanced Nursing, Nursing Forum, Social Sciences in Health: International Journal of Research and Practice, Nursing Connections, the Journal of Professional Nursing, the Journal of Nursing Education, and Health Care for Women International. She has also penned many chapters for books, including "Respect for the Elderly: Implications for Human Service Providers" in 2009, "Qualitative Research in Nursing: Advancing the Humanistic Imperative" in 1995, "Nursing in the Community" in 1992, and "Ethical and Moral Dimensions of Care" in 1990. She served as manuscript reviewer for such journals as Image, Nursing Research, Qualitative Health Research: An Interdisciplinary International Journal and Nursing in the Community from 1991-98. In addition, Dr. Kelly remains affiliated with various organizations including Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, and the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi.
In light of her exceptional undertakings, Dr. Kelly has accrued several accolades and honors throughout her impressive career. She received the Brodie Doctoral Award from the University of Cincinnati in 1987 and the Alumni Appreciation Award from the College of Nursing at the University of Cincinnati in 1989. Dr. Kelly was selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who in American Nursing.
