With more than 60 years of industry experience to his credit, Mr. Staryk has been recognized as professor emeritus by the School of Music at the University of Washington since 1997. Prior to this appointment, he held the positions of professor of violin and chair of the string division from 1987 to 1997, professor of violin at the Royal Conservatory of Music from 1975 to 1987, professor of violin at the Vancouver Academy of Music from 1972 to 1975, and professor of violin at the Oberlin College Conservatory from 1968 to 1972, the latter of which he worked as the youngest full professor in the establishment's history. Additionally, he served as concertmaster for the Toronto Symphony Orchestra from 1982 to 1987, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra from 1963 to 1967, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and Amsterdam Conservatory from 1960 to 1963, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra London from 1956 to 1959, and the CBC/Radio-Canada from 1951 to 1955.
Before embarking on his professional path, Mr. Staryk pursued an education at the Royal Conservatory of Music, completing coursework from 1942 to 1948. He continued his academic efforts from 1945 to 1948 with coursework at Harbord Collegiate Institute. In 1980 Mr. Staryk received an honorary Doctor of Letters from York University.
Beyond his responsibilities within the field, Mr. Staryk has contributed to numerous endeavors outside of his professional circles. He contributed to Quartet Canada as a founding member from 1975 to 1980 and on the faculty of music at the University of Toronto from 1980 to 1987. He also maintained involvement as a visiting professor at Northwestern University from 1965 to 1966, the University of Victoria in 1972, and the University of Ottawa in 1975. Furthermore, Mr. Staryk was a soloist and recitalist throughout North America, Europe and the Far East, as well as a recording artist for labels such as Centaur, EMI-HMV, and the Canadian Broadcasting Company.
Mr. Staryk found much success with his written works, having co-authored "Fiddling with Life" in 2000. His work has been featured in such publications as "The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians," "Encyclopaedia Canada," "The Great Violinists," "Discopaedia of the Violin," and a cover story in 1994 in The Strad (UK) magazine, contributing many articles over the years. Furthermore, Mr. Staryk contributed to "Careers in Music" with the Frederick Harris Music Company, as well as the University of Washington showcase, "A Century of Excellence in the Arts, Humanities, and Professional Schools at the University of Washington" in 1997.
In light of his exceptional undertakings, Mr. Staryk has accrued several accolades and honors throughout his impressive career. He was recognized as an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2007 and as a Fellow of the Royal Conservatory of Music in 2008. Likewise, he was presented with two Awards from the Council for the Arts in Ottawa in 1968 and 1975, a Distinguished Teaching Award from the School of Music at the University of Washington in 1995, the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal from the Government of Canada in 2012 and 2013, the Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee Medal from the Government of Canada, and the Shevchenko Medal from the Ukrainian Canadian Congress. He was also honored in International Who's Who in Music, International Who's Who of Intellectuals, International Who's Who of Professionals and Canadian Who's Who. Mr. Staryk was selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Entertainment and Who's Who in the World.
