Parker with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Ms. Parker celebrates many years' experience in her professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes she has accrued in her field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
The owner and senior adviser of Susan Parker and Associates since 2011, Ms. Parker has spent the bulk of her career combating social and economic injustice. Formerly serving as the director of policy and development in the Office of Disability Employment Policy for the U.S. Department of Labor, her three decades of employment also include executive level posts with various community organizations, two state governments, the Social Security Administration and the U.S. Department of Labor. Likewise, Ms. Parker was the global disability advisor at the International Labor Office, Geneva, Switzerland and the Secretary General of Rehabilitation International, where she focused on building policy and program support with the United Nations for disability issues.
Becoming involved in her profession due to the lack of justice that society provides to various groups of people, Ms. Parker narrowed in on serving those with disabilities and mental illness. Continuing to strive to make a difference, she has been recognized numerous times for her dedication. Ms. Parker, as Director of Policy (Disability) received seven (7) Secretary of Labor's Exemplary Achievement Awards from the U.S. Department of Labor between 2003 and 2011, earned a Commissioner's Citation from the U.S. Social Security Administration as the Disability Commissioner in 1992 and 1993, the Kathryn C. Arneson Award from People to People in 1992 and a Children's Disability Public Policy Award from the ARC of the United States in 1992.
However, a highlight of Ms. Parker's career was her participation in the demobilization of 500 child soldiers in Sierra Leone in December 1995. One of three women to persuade the country's dictator to release these children, she was the secretary general of Rehabilitation International at the time, working with the UN's special rapporteur on the effects of armed conflict on children. Ms. Parker also served various local organizations during her career, including as president of the U.S. Council for International Rehabilitation in Washington, D.C. and on the board of directors for the Parent Teacher Organization at Rundlett Junior High School in Concord, NH and Fairlee, VT.
Ms. Parker is the current chairman since 2018 of the New Hampshire Seacoast Republican Women's Policy and Research Committee. She was elected Librarian in 2017 for the Exeter (N.H.) Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution. Her current post as the elected Treasurer of Rehabilitation International and the RI Foundation (2012-2020) and Chairman of the RI Centennial Committee coincides with other appointed positions: Southern New Hampshire University (Stephen F. Knapp Fund, 2007+); Am. Occupational Therapists Association (Senior Policy Advisor, 2010-2016); RI Honour Council (1999+). Presenting numerous speeches, seminars, papers worldwide in her area of expertise, Ms. Parker has also authored various articles in newspapers and professional journals, including the publication of several pieces of poetry.
Ms. Parker holds a Bachelor of Science in English and French from the University of Vermont and a Master of Social Work and a Master of Social Planning from Boston College Graduate School of Social Work, where she later earned an Outstanding Alumnae Award. She has been certified as an emergency medical technician in Vermont, certified by the Governor's Policy Center at Duke University and certified in mental health management by Harvard University. Ms. Parker has been showcased in many editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Politics, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in the East and Who's Who of American Women.
Formerly married to Allen D. Avery, Ms. Parker is the proud mother of two sons and has four grandsons. In her free time, she enjoys skiing, boating, creative writing, working in her garden and enjoying film and the performing arts. With future plans to continue to teach when possible, Ms. Parker said that she will also take on board assignments where she can make a positive difference.
