With more than 70 years of industry experience, Dr. Steiner has been recognized as professor emeritus at Indiana University since 1990. Prior to her retirement, she served as an honors professor from 1985 to 1990, professor of women's studies from 1973 to 1990, and professor of educational science and research methodology from 1967 to 1990. Prior to these appointments, Dr. Steiner worked as a professor of philosophy at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette from 1966 to 1967, professor of research methodology at the Ohio State University from 1961 to 1966, assistant professor of philosophy at Marietta College from 1957 to 1960, lecturer of philosophy at the University of Southern California from 1956 to 1957, and instructor of philosophy at the University of Manitoba from 1953 to 1954.
Earlier in her career, Dr. Steiner was a teacher of physical and biological science at Los Angeles High School from 1951 to 1952, a teacher of anatomy and microbiology at Los Angeles City College from 1950 to 1952, a teacher of physical and biological science at Kanawha High School from 1949 to 1950, and a zoology instructor at the University of Kansas in 1947. She began her career as a teaching assistant in general chemistry and general zoology at Saint Louis University from 1945 to 1946.
Before embarking on her professional path, Dr. Steiner pursued an education at Saint Louis University, earning a Bachelor of Science in zoology in 1946. Following this accomplishment, she completed graduate coursework in zoology in 1947 at the University of Kansas. She continued her academic efforts in 1949 at the University of Missouri, receiving a Master of Education in biology and education. In 1954, she obtained a Master of Arts in philosophy and psychology at the University of Manitoba. Dr. Steiner concluded her studies at the University of Southern California in 1957, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy in biology and philosophy of science.
Beyond her responsibilities within the field, Dr. Steiner has participated in numerous endeavors in her professional circles. The director of the Overseas Study Program at Hangzhou University in 1988, she held multiple additional roles at Indiana University, such as director of graduate studies in educational science from 1981 to 1990, director of the National Science Foundation project in 1979, and director of the educational inquiry methodology program from 1973 to 1976. Dr. Steiner also contributed to the Ohio State University as co-director of social studies at the Education Curriculum Center from 1963 to 1966, the research coordinator for the Institute of Child Development and Family Life from 1960 to 1961, research associate from 1960 to 1961, and visiting professor of graduate studies in 1959.
Dr. Steiner has maintained involvement as visiting professor at the Czech Academy of Sciences, Institute of Sociology of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, National Autonomous University of Mexico, University of Zagreb, University of Warsaw, and Hangzhou University. A Fulbright professor of educational science at Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro in 1981, she was associated with UCLA as a visiting professor in the philosophy of education in 1963 and the University of British Columbia as a visiting professor in the psychology of education in 1960. Dr. Steiner was formerly active as a microbiologist for Wood Treating Chemical Company from 1947 to 1948, a chemist for Scullen Steel Company from 1947 to 1948, and a chemist for Atlas Powder Company in 1943.
Dr. Steiner found success with her creative endeavors as well, having authored "Women and Education" in 1975, "Education and American Culture" in 1980, "Educology of The Free" in 1981, and "Methodology of Theory Building" in 1987. Her writings have largely focused on knowledge about the educational process, which she has entitled "Educology" and on General Systems Theory in which she integrated set theory, information and graph theory into "SIGGS." Her creative endeavors included the study of the workspace of women professors in various countries throughout the world – Poland, China and Russia, to cite a few. Dr. Steiner has also written numerous articles for professional journals.
In light of her exceptional undertakings, Dr. Steiner has accrued several accolades and honors throughout her impressive career. She was presented with recognition and certification of elected membership with the New York Academy of Science in 1984. Furthermore, she was recognized as a founding sponsor and is on the Founders' Roll of Honor for the Martin Luther King Monument. Dr. Steiner was selected for inclusion in many editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the World, and Who's Who of American Women and she was awarded the O'Connor Professorship at Colgate University in 1979 at which she presented her vision of Educology. Her lectures were published as "Educology of the Free."
