With more than 70 years of experience to her credit, Dr. Battin has worked in her private practice with a focus on psychology, audiology and neuropsychology since 1959. During this time, she held the roles of clinical instructor with the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston School of Medicine from 1964 to 1980, director of the audiology laboratory for the Houston ENT & Allergy from 1963 to 1973, and audiologist for Doctors Guilford, Wright and Draper in Houston, TX, from 1959 to 1963. Previously, she served as director of speech pathology and psychology at the Hedgecroft Hospital and Rehabilitation Center from 1956 to 1959, audiologist for the Center for Hearing and Speech in Houston from 1954 to 1956, counselor for The Ann Arbor School from 1950 to 1951, and instructor in speech pathology for the University of Denver from 1949 to 1950. Dr. Battin began her career as a counselor for the Women's Army Corps from 1945 to 1946.
Before embarking on her professional path, Dr. Battin pursued an education at the University of Denver, earning a Bachelor of Arts in speech and hearing in 1948. She continued her academic efforts with a Master of Science in speech science at the University of Michigan in 1950. Following these accomplishments, she graduated from the University of Florida in 1959, receiving a Doctor of Philosophy in psychology. Dr. Battin concluded her studies with postgraduate coursework at the Miller School of Medicine at the University of Miami in 1957 and the University of Iowa in 1958.
In the state of Texas, Dr. Battin has been licensed as a speech pathologist, audiologist and psychologist. Certified as a forensic examiner and medical examiner by the American Board of Forensic Professionals, she has been a diplomate in forensic neuropsychology, developmental psychology and psychological assessment. Additionally, Dr. Battin has been a diplomate of the American Board of Psychological Specialties, the American Board of Professional Disability Consultants and the American Board of Forensic Medicine.
Beyond her responsibilities within the field, Dr. Battin has participated in numerous endeavors outside of her professional circles. She has contributed to the advisory boards for Caring Adoptions since 1993, Bayou City Concert Musicals from 2006 to 2017, the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts Friends from 1998 to 2012, and the Environmental Health Screening Laboratory from 1989 to 1999. Additionally, she was on the board of directors for the MusicFest from 1990 to 2002, Houston Repertory Theatre from 1993 to 1998, Dyslexic Adult Support Services from 1986 to 1990, Children's Resource and Information Center from 1981 to 1985, and Juvenile Court Volunteers from 1980 to 1983. An international lecturer in her industry, she held the roles of neuropsychological consultant for the education division of the Environmental Health Screening Laboratory from 1989 to 1999, vice president of the Behavioral Perceptual Center from 1986 to 1990, adjunct clinical instructor for the University of Houston from 1981 to 1986, clinical instructor in the department of otolaryngology at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston School of Medicine from 1964 to 1980, the director of the Audiology, Vestibulography and Speech Pathology Laboratory for Houston ENT & Allergy from 1963 to 1973, and lecturer for the First Word Program on KUHT-TV in 1959.
Dr. Baffin has found much success with her written work as well, having co-authored "Speech and Language Delay" in 1964, "Private Practice: Guidelines for Speech Pathology and Audiology" in 1971, the film "The Dysynchronous Child" in 1971, and "Vestibulography" in 1974. The co-editor of "Private Practice in Audiology and Speech and Language Pathology" in 1978, she was the editor of the Journal of the American Academy of Private Practice in Speech Pathology and Audiology from 1981 to 1984. Dr. Battin has also contributed to "Seminars in Speech, Language, Hearing (Northern), Auditory Disorders in School Children" and "Current Therapy of Communications Disorder," as well as multiple articles to esteemed publications.
In addition to her primary trade, Dr. Battin remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to her areas of expertise. She maintained involvement as president of the Biofeedback Society of Harris County in 1984, on the committee on private practice for the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association from 1971 to 1974, on the professional services board for the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association from 1967 to 1970, president of the American Academy of Private Practice in Speech Pathology and Audiology from 1968 to 1970, and vice president of the Texas Speech-Language-Hearing Association in 1968. Likewise, she was a member of the American Psychological Association, the Society for Ear, Nose, and Throat Advances in Children, the Biofeedback Society of Texas, the International Association of Logopedics and Phoniatrics, and the Academy of Aphasia. Dr. Battin was also active with the Houston Psychological Association, the Texas Academy of Audiology, the Texas Psychological Association, the American College of Forensic Examiners and the International Association of Applied Psychology.
In light of her exceptional undertakings, Dr. Battin has accrued several accolades and honors throughout her impressive career. She was presented with the Gold Award for Educational Exhibit from the American Academy of Pediatrics in 1969, the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Houston Psychological Association in 1996, the Leadership Award from the Science Learning Corporation in 2000, and a Trademark of Top Doctors of America, Honors Edition, in 2018. She was recognized as a clinical fellow of the Division of Clinical Services at the University of Florida from 1952 to 1954, a fellow of the American Academy of Audiology, a fellow of the World Academy, Inc., and a fellow of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. She has also been honored among the first Americans involved with the International Association of Logopedics and Phoniatrics. Dr. Battin was selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, Who's Who in the World and Who's Who of American Women.
