With nearly 50 years of academic experience, Dr. Hopke has been recognized as professor emeritus of Clarkson University since 2016, having been the Bayard D. Clarkson Distinguished Professor since 2002, Robert A. Plane Professor from 1989 to 2001, director for the Institute for a Sustainable Environment from 2009 to 2015, director of the Center for Air Resources Engineering and Science at Clarkson University from 2002 to 2016, and dean of the graduate school from 1997 to 1999. Since retiring, he has worked as an adjunct professor for the Department of Public Health Sciences of the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. Prior to this appointment, he held the position of managing partner for CHANGE from 2013 to 2016 and holds the position of managing partner for TRM Environmental Consultants that began in 2014. Previously, he served the University of Illinois as professor from 1982 to 1989, associate professor from 1978 to 1982, and assistant professor from 1974 to 1978. Dr. Hopke began his career as a research associate for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology from1969 to 1970, and assistant professor for the State University of New York at Fredonia from 1970 to 1974.
Before embarking on his professional path, Dr. Hopke pursued an education at Trinity College, earning a Bachelor of Science in 1965. He continued his academic efforts with a Master of Arts in chemistry in 1967 at Princeton University. Dr. Hopke concluded his studies at Princeton University in 1969, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy in chemistry.
Beyond his responsibilities within the field, Dr. Hopke has participated in numerous endeavors in his professional circles. He contributed to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as chair of the Grant Review Panel on Air Chemistry and Physics from 1987 to 1992, on the Clean Air Scientific Advisory Committee from 1995 to 2000, and chair of the Clean Air Scientific Advisory Committee from 2000 to 2004. Likewise, Dr. Hopke has held a role for the International Organization for Standardization, notably on Technical Committee 285.
Dr. Hopke found success with his written works as well, having authored "Receptor Modeling in Environmental Chemistry" in 1985. He has been the editor for "Radon and Its Decay Products" in 1987, "Receptor Modeling for Air Quality Management" in 1991, and Chemometrics and Intelligent Laboratory Systems since 1987. A contributor of many articles to esteemed journals, he was the editor-in-chief for Aerosol Science and Technology from 1993 to 2002. Most recently, Dr. Hopke has excelled as an associate editor at Air Quality, Atmosphere & Health from 2007 to 2011 as well as Aerosol and Air Quality Research since 2010.
In addition to his primary trade, Dr. Hopke remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to his areas of expertise. He was also active with the American Association for Aerosol Research on the board of directors from 1989 to 1994, as vice president from 2001 to 2002, and as president from 2003 to 2004. He maintained involvement with the Air and Waste Management Association as a committee chair from 1990 to 1992. Furthermore, Dr. Hopke is a member of Gesellschaft fiir Aerosolforschung, the American Chemical Society, the American Physical Society, the International Society of Exposure Analysis, the International Society of Indoor Air Quality and Climate, and the International Statistical Institute.
In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Hopke has accrued several accolades and honors throughout his impressive career. He has been presented with Fissan-Pui TSI Award from the International Aerosol Research Assembly, the Constance L. Mehlman Award from the International Society of Exposure Science in 2016, an Excellence in Chemometrics Award from the Eastern Analytical Symposium in 2007, a Lifetime Achievement Award from Chemometrics in Analytical Chemistry Conference, and the David Sinclair Award from the American Association for Aerosol Research. He previously obtained grants from the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, United States Department of Energy, Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change, California Air Resources Board, the New York State Energy Research and Development Administration, and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. He was recognized as a Fellow of the International Aerosol Research Assembly, a Fellow of the Association for the Advancement of Science, a Fellow of the American Association for Aerosol Research, and a Jefferson Science Fellow of the U.S. Department of State. Dr. Hopke was selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the East, and Who's Who in the World.
