William N. Kelley, MD, MACP, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

A professor in the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania for nearly 30 years, Dr. Kelley served for more than 10 years as Executive Vice President of the University with responsibilities as Dean of the School of Medicine and as chief executive officer of the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center (1989-2000) and later as the founding CEO of the University of Pennsylvania Health System (1993-2000), the nation's first university based fully integrated academic health system. Prior to joining the faculty in 1989, he was a professor and department chairman of internal medicine and professor in the department of biological chemistry at the University of Michigan Medical School (1975-1989). Dr. Kelley has also served as a professor of medicine, associate professor of biochemistry, and chief of the division of rheumatic and genetic diseases at Duke University School of Medicine (1968-1975).

Upon his arrival at the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Kelley was already recognized for his innovative research and leadership in academic medicine. However, with the recruitment and support of top faculty and construction of several new laboratory buildings, the medical school became ranked as one the top two US medical schools for funding from the National Institutes of Health. In the ranking of medical schools by US News and World Report, Penn moved from #10 to #3 in the 1990s. The establishment of gene therapy as a major research initiative in the 1990s eventually resulted in the first two FDA approvals (both in 2017) for specific gene therapy drugs, both of which were developed at Penn Medicine. In 1997, for the first time, The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP) was moved onto the honor roll of the nation's top hospitals by US News and World Report. Dr. Kelley also created the team that led to the establishment of Curriculum 2000 and of Virtual Curriculum 2000 at the University of Pennsylvania, important new approaches to medical education.

Earning a Doctor of Medicine with honors at Emory University in 1963, Dr. Kelley is a diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine. Completing his internship and residency in medicine at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, he then served as a clinical associate in the section of human biochemical genetics at the National Institutes of Health for two years. Dr. Kelley then spent another year as senior resident in medicine at the Massachusetts General Hospital and teaching fellow of medicine at Harvard University Medical School before obtaining his first faculty appointment at Duke University.

Currently serving on the board of directors of Transenterix, Inc. since 2015, Dr. Kelley formerly served on the boards of directors of Merck and Co., Beckman Coulter, Polymedix, Applied Biosurfaces, Channel Health and Gen Vec. He has also served as trustee for Emory University and he is currently active on the Board of the Woodruff Health Sciences Center of Emory University as an emeritus trustee. He is a master of the American College of Physicians and a master of the American College of Rheumatology. Dr. Kelley is also an elected member of the American Philosophical Society, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the National Academy of Medicine, the Association of American Physicians and an elected fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He served as Chairman of the American Board of Internal Medicine and of the Residency Review Committee in Internal Medicine. He also served as President of the American Federation for Clinical Research, the President of the American Society of Clinical Investigation, and President of the American College of Rheumatology.

He has more than 300 publications and 17 books. He was the co-founder and senior editor of the "Textbook of Rheumatology" with Harris, Ruddy and Sledge for five editions beginning in 1981; the book, now in its 10th edition is entitled Kelley and Firestein's Textbook of Rheumatology. In addition, he was the founder and editor-in- chief of the Textbook of Internal Medicine through 3 editions. Now in its 4th edition, it is entitled Kelley's Textbook of Internal Medicine. Dr. Kelley's patent with two other coinventors demonstrating proof of concept of in vivo (in the body) gene therapy submitted in 1987 issued in 1997 (#5672344). Dr. Kelley also received an honorary Master of Arts from the University of Pennsylvania in 1989.

He has been the recipient of multiple recognition awards, including the 2005 Kober Medal from the Association of American Physicians, the 2000 Emory Medal, the 1999 David E. Rogers Award from the Association of American Medical Colleges, the Phillips Award from the American College of Physicians, the Williams Award from the Professors of Medicine, and the Gold Medal of the American College of Rheumatology. He has been cited in nearly every edition of Who's Who in America since 1987, as well as many more editions of Who's Who, including Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in Corporate America, Who's Who in American Education, and Who's Who in the World. He was married to Lois Faville for 58 years until her death on 1/6/18. Dr. Kelley has four children and nine grandchildren.
