The daughter of Orla Raymond and Mary Jane Smiley, Dr. Smiley was born on June 5, 1932 in Columbia City, Indiana. Her career as a musicologist began with piano and flute lessons during elementary and high school and her education at Ball State University, where she obtained a BS in 1954. After graduation, Dr. Smiley was a public school music teacher in Logansport, Indiana from 1954 to 1961. Meanwhile, she continued her studies at Northwestern University, where she received a MusM in 1958. She studied with Nadia Boulanger at the Ecoles d'Art Américaines in Fontainbleu, France in 1959. Dr. Smiley then studied at the University of Illinois, receiving a PhD in 1970.
From 1961 to 2014, Dr. Smiley was a faculty member of the music department at the State University of New York, College at Oswego and chair of the music department from 1976 to 1981. She was promoted to a distinguished teaching professor and emeritus professor in 1974 and 2014, respectively. Dr. Smiley taught courses in the full range of music history, as well as classes in American music and women and music. She pursues research in Renaissance and American music, contributing articles to various professional journals and giving presentations at numerous conferences. She has directed and performed with the Oswego Recorder Consort, and provided research for the Ontario Singers. As a distinguished musicologist, Dr. Smiley is a member of various organizations, including the American Musicological Society, the Society for American Music, Early Music America, the American Recorder Society, Oswego Opera Theater, the American Association of University Women, the National Organization for Women, the Oswego County Historical Society, Safe Haven, Heritage Foundation of Oswego, Friends of the Library, Delta Kappa Gamma, Phi Delta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi, Sigma Tau Delta, Sigma Alpha Iota, Pi Kappa Lambda, Kappa Delta Pi, and Mu Beta Psi.
Dr. Smiley was branch council representative, branch council coordinator, cultural interests representative, diversity director, and historian for the American Association of University Women, New York State. She continues to be an active member of that esteemed organization as co-president of the Oswego Branch, as well as serving on various committees of the Society for American Music, the American Musicological Society, and the Alpha Iota Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma . Since 2009, she has been the president of the board of directors of the Oswego Opera Theater.
Dr. Smiley was the recipient of the Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1973. From 1990 to 1991, she was a grantee of the National Endowment of the Humanities and recipient of fellowships from the State University of New York Research Foundation in 1971, 1972, and 1974. Dr. Smiley has appeared in various Marquis Who's Who publications, including the 2nd and 3rd editions of Who's Who in Entertainment. She has been featured in the 44th through 70th editions of Who's Who in America, as well as the 29th, 30th, 33rd through 37th, and 39th through 43rd editions of Who's Who in the East. Her achievements also were recorded in the 13th, 19th, 20th, and 24th through 28th editions of Who's Who of American Women.
