Brown, former Hamden resident, with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. Mr. Brown retired in 1993 after teaching history at Hillhouse High School in New Haven, CT, for 13 years. Involved in education for many years, he previously taught social studies at Troup Middle School in New Haven, and was a learning center teacher for the New Haven Board of Education and a resource teacher at Sheridan Middles School in New Haven, among several other academic roles. Earlier in his career, Mr. Brown spent time as a public relations director and assistant credit manager with Colonial Sand & Stone Company in New York City and as an employment counselor with the New York City Department of Welfare.
Very active within his local community, Mr. Brown served on various boards and committees over the past 40 years. Currently serving on the board of directors of Masonicare at Home since 2015 and on the board of directors of the Masonicare Home Health and Hospice and other home services since 2017, he is a member of Ashlar Lodge 332, Phi Delta Kappa and the New Haven County Retired Teachers Association, where he formerly served as vice president and secretary. He has also been involved with several mental health boards, including as facilitator of the Greater New Haven chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) since 1993.
During the early 1960s, Mr. Brown was a columnist for "The Luna Spark." He has since contributed numerous articles to peer-reviewed journals in his area of expertise and has been the recipient of several awards, including a Man of the Year Award of Merit from the Congregation Mishkan Israel's Brotherhood in 1978 and a People Helping People Award from Sears and NAMI in 2001.
Earning a Bachelor of Science in journalism and a Master of Arts in American civilization at New York University in 1955 and 1960, respectively, Mr. Brown continued his studies by completing postgraduate work at Yeshiva University and the University of Connecticut. In 1977, he also earned a Sixth Year Professional Diploma at Southern Connecticut State University. Married to Merle Thelma Kaminsky since 1956, he is the father of two children and grandfather of three grandchildren. He enjoys collecting stamps and political and sports items, as well as being involved in community service. Notably, Mr. Brown has been cited in more than 25 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the World, Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who in the East.
