Nelson A. Wivel, MD, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Wivel, MD, with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Wivel celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. Dr. Wivel is a physician and researcher who is currently in emeritus status as the former deputy director at the Institute of Human Gene Therapy at the Perelman School of Medicine with the University of Pennsylvania since 2007. Serving in his role for 11 years, he also served as the director of the Office of Recombinant DNA Activities and was a medical officer for AIDS research at the General Clinical Research Centers at the National Institutes of Health. Furthermore, Dr. Wivel spent a total of 20 years as the head of the ultrastructural biology section and the ultrastructural studies section at the National Cancer Institute.

In addition to his years in the field, Dr. Wivel taught at Penn Medicine with the University of Pennsylvania Health Systems in Philadelphia as an adjunct professor of molecular and cellular engineering and as program chair of the ethics and public policy research program. He also spent time with the National Institutes of Health as an executive director of the recombinant DNA advisory committee and has been currently a biotechnology consultant for more than 10 years.

Earlier in his career, Dr. Wivel gave 44 talks in the span of just four years during the 1980s. Speaking on the topic of human gene therapy in the United States, it was an outreach activity that he felt was necessary. During his tenure, he also conducted research on murine retroviruses that can function as moveable genetic elements called transposons, served as an associate editor for several scholarly journals, and contributed more than 100 articles to various journals, such as the Journal of Virology.

A longstanding member of the American Society of Cell Biology, the American Society of Virology and the American Society of Gene Therapy, Dr. Wivel served as a senior member of the U.S. Biotechnology Delegation to the OECD in Paris. Earning his undergraduate degree from Eastern New Mexico University and Doctor of Medicine from Stanford University, he then interned at Cornell University, where he was also an assistant resident in medicine, was an assistant resident in pathology at Stanford University, and a research trainee in pathology at Washington University. Notably, Dr. Wivel is a diplomate of the American Board of Pathology.

Honored with an Angela B. Kirk Scholarship to attend Stanford University, once Dr. Wivel was established, he also received a Commendation Medal from the U.S. Public Health Service in 1990. Included in approximately 30 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering and Who's Who in the World, Dr. Wivel was married for 36 years to Carol Henderson until her passing in 1999. He is the proud father of two successful children. In 2010 he was married to Connie Caldwell.
