A religious organization administrator who has been in the field of religious services for much of her career, Dr. Townsend has most recently been known as the chief operating officer of Matthew 25:34-40 Ministries, which has missions in both the Ukraine and India and is overseen by her husband, John Townsend. Early on, Dr. Townsend taught biology at the Methacton School District in Fairview Village, PA, between 1968 and 1970. She has since owned her own business as president and consultant of The Townsend Research Institute, served on the board of directors and as vice president of public relations for the World Outreach Center of Faith and was on the board of directors and served as a pastoral assistant for the Christ Center Bible Therapy.
Outside of her career in ministry and religious services, Dr. Townsend was an administrator and associate registrar at La Jolla University in continuing education. Additionally, at age 71 and as a second-degree black belt in Tang Soo Do karate, she worked as an instructor at the U.S. Karate Academy. Heavily influenced by her studies in human behavior and the writing of her book on hostage survival, she taught as an instructor at the U.S. Navy Advanced Survival Evasion Resistance Escape School during the 1980s. She also retired from the U.S. Navy Reserve as a Commander. Serving with a number of other organizations as well, including on the board of directors for the Christ Fellowship Church of San Diego for nearly a decade, Dr. Townsend was also a religious volunteer at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in San Diego and a volunteer with the San Diego County Jail Ministries.
A lifetime member of the Naval Reserve Association, the Navy League of the United States and the National University Alumni Association, and longtime member of various other professional organizations, Dr. Townsend was president of several clubs of the General Federation of Women's Clubs, International and served in numerous roles with GFWC California Federation of Women's Clubs. Named Outstanding Junior Officer of the Year by the California chapter of the Reserve Officers Association in 1982, being elected as president of the San Diego District of California Federation of Women's Club has been one of her greatest honors.
The author of the book "Hostage Survival: Resisting the Dynamics of Captivity" in 1983 and the co-author with her husband John of the book "Ecclesiastes: A Course for Small Group Discipleship" in 2009, Dr. Townsend has also contributed scholarly articles to various professional journals over the years in her area of expertise. She holds a Bachelor of Science in secondary education from West Chester State University, a Master of Business Administration from National University and a Doctor of Philosophy in human behavior from La Jolla University. Married to her husband John Townsend since 1976, Dr. Townsend has been featured in close to three dozen editions of Who's Who, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Finance and Industry and Who's Who in the World.
