Dr. Hamilton is currently an associate professor of management at Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, FL. Teaching on campus since 2004, he formerly lectured and served as an adjunct professor of business at the University of South Florida where he was named Faculty Advisor of the Year for 2003-2004. Prior to his career in academia, Dr. Hamilton spent 22 years traveling the world as an officer in the U.S. Army serving in a variety of leadership positions, including the Pentagon. Upon retirement from the military, he co-founded a high-volume spay/neuter clinic (HQHVSN), which focused on the ending of companion animal euthanasia in Hillsborough County, FL. He also spent nearly a decade in the business community, including as the founder and managing partner of Total Employment Company in Tampa, FL.
Currently teaching seven courses, including MN 110S Principles of Management and Leadership, MN 310S Operations Management and MN 320S Principles of Entrepreneurship, Dr. Hamilton's research interests include leadership and leadership development, grassroots organizational creation and development, the creation of shared values, public management, social entrepreneurship, sense making and framing in all three sectors, and companion animal policy. He has published several articles in his field in such publications as the Anthroszoos, Business Ethics, A European Review, Journal of Ethics in Leadership, Human Relations and Key Concepts in Leadership Studies, has contributed over a dozen conference proceedings, two peer-reviewed book reviews and has been published in a newsletter called "Feral Cat Activist" for his work with animals. Notably, one of Dr. Hamilton's article on the topic of framing and sensemaking was selected as one of the top 50 articles in more than 400 business and economic journals for 2006.
Very active with multiple organizations within his community, especially the Alley Cat Allies as a member of their science board of advisors, No More Homeless Pets of Hillsborough County as co-founder and vice president and the Animal Advisory Committee of Hillsborough County as Chairman and board member, Mr. Hamilton has also served as a board member with the Brandon Chamber of Commerce and in the same capacity for the Gulf Ridge Council of the Boy Scouts of America.
Earning a Bachelor of Science in History and Psychology at Kent State University, a Master of Science in Administration at the University of Southern California, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Business Administration from the University of South Florida, Dr. Hamilton also served as a lieutenant colonel with the Ordnance Corps in the U.S. Army from 1970 to 1992. A longstanding member of the Academy of Management, American Sociological Association, the International Leadership Association, the Animals and Society Institute, and the Southern Management Association, Dr. Hamilton has been the recipient of multiple awards throughout his career for his dedication. Recently, he received a John Satterfield Outstanding Mentor Award from Eckerd College in 2017 and an Emerald Management Citation of Excellence in 2006. The proud father of two children and three grandchildren, Dr. Hamilton has been showcased in several editions of Who's Who in America for his accomplishments. In his down time, he mostly enjoys reading and traveling. In fact, he has traveled to Europe multiple times, where he visited the city of London with students from Eckerd College eight times.
