As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Currently a professor of philosophy and political science at Syracuse University, Dr. Thomas is a celebrated figure in his field whose work on moral theory, social philosophy and the often complicated relationship between African Americans and Jewish Americans has garnered him much notoriety throughout his career. Prior to assuming his most recent position, he was an Andrew Mellon Faculty Fellow at Harvard University and a Fellow of the National Humanities Center. Dr. Thomas has also taught internationally as a visiting professor at the University of South Africa and a presenter of medical lectures at the Medical School of the University of Cape Town.

Likewise, he has been appointed to the faculties of the University of Maryland, Oberlin College and the University of Notre Dame. Dr. Thomas further served Arizona State University as the Lincoln Lecturer for the fall 2002 semester.

As someone who has always enjoyed discussing various ideas and was encouraged to do so by educators in his own life, Dr. Thomas entered the teaching profession in order to provide the same type of inspiration to students under his tutelage. After joining the Syracuse faculty in 1989, he was named the university's Scholar-Teacher of the Year in 1993, one year after being featured in the education section of The New York Times. Dr. Thomas also received an award from the National Endowment for the Humanities in 1981.

Much of Dr. Thomas' work focuses on morality in humans and how it impacts our interactions with one another. Other concepts he explores include trust, gratitude and friendship. His article "Forgiving the Unforgiving" appeared in "Moral Philosophy and the Holocaust," edited by Eve Garrard and Geoffrey Scarre, while some of his other titles include "The Family and the Political Self," "Upside-Down Equality: A Response to Kantian Thought," "The Moral Self in the Face of Injustice" and "Sexual Orientation and Human Rights." One of his most notable essays, "Being Moral and Handling the Truth," published in Social Philosophy and Policy, explores circumstances under which it might be acceptable to lie, such as in cases where the truth might be more damaging or traumatic to the recipient. In 2003, Dr. Thomas published an article in Raisons Politiques, a French political theory journal in which he was featured alongside noted philosopher Judith Jarvis Thomson.

Dr. Thomas has been affiliated with the American Society for Political and Legal Philosophy since 1976 and the American Philosophical Association since 1971. The recipient of a Bachelor of Philosophy from the University of Maryland, he has additionally obtained a Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Pittsburgh.
