FARGO, ND, July 27, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Howard David Peet with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Mr. Peet celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Howard Peet, professor emeritus of North Dakota State University in Fargo, ND, retired in 1986. He was a longtime professor of English. During his teaching tenure he also developed, taught in and directed the Concentrated Approach Program, an alternative to the freshman year of college. Prior to entering academia, Mr. Peet graduated high school at Barnesville, MN in 1948. He joined the U.S. Navy and served through 1949. Coming out of the Navy Mr. Peet took the position of ride trumpeter touring the Midwest with the Ray Palmer orchestra. In 1952 he was recalled by the Navy to go aboard the USS Ernest G. Small, DDR, 838, a destroyer picket ship, where he served throughout the Korean War. For this service, Mr. Peet was awarded five medals.
In 1983 Howard D. Peet found the love of his life in Jacquelyn Hegge. Prior to Mr. Peet's ship leaving to Korea they were married. Upon Howard's discharge from the Navy in 1954 he took the job of lead trumpet and band manager with the Kliff Riggs orchestra on tour out of Omaha. Completing that tour he enrolled at Macalester College to earn his Bachelor of Arts in 1956. From there he went on to Moorhead State University to complete a Bachelor of Science before earning his master's degree in 1965 and continuing on doing postgraduate work at the University of Minnesota. During this period he also formed and led the Knights of Swing orchestra, a small jazz group that performed locally over a fifteen year period.
In 1965 he accepted a teaching position at North Dakota State University in the Department of English. Over the years Mr. Peet began his writing career and in the process met James Coomber, Chairman of the English Department at Concordia College. The two of them began exchanging ideas and original materials for publication and to use in their classes. The result of this collaboration was a series of seven books for grades 6 through 12 entitled Wordskill. The series was first published by Science Research Associates (SRA) in 1979. It soon gained a strong foothold in American education by being sold in all 50 states as well as 14 foreign countries.
This led to many more publications in a variety of forms from teaching manuals, workbooks, spelling books and grammar books to internet courses authored and co-authored by Howard Peet. He also writes poetry as a hobby. One of his major poems was "An Arizona Legend." This historical poem was published by the Southern Division of the American Historical Society in Tucson, Arizona in 2012.
Holding several civic positions during the 1970s, Mr. Peet served as treasurer of his local Presbyterian Church in Deerhorn, MN, and served as president of the local Parent Teacher Association in Barnesville, MN. He was also a member and served on the Board of the Fargo Musician's Union. Professional organizations that he has belonged to include the National Council of Teachers of English, Writers of the Purple Sage, the American Legion, and the Korean War Veterans Association.
Among the awards Mr. Peet has received from North Dakota State University are the President's Silver Medallion, the Brown Bag Seminar Service Award, and the Blue Key of North Dakota State University award. He has also been awarded the Red River Valley Educator Award from the Red River Valley Heritage Society. He has been cited in over 10 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the Midwest and Who's Who in the World.
Mr. Peet and his wife Jacquelyn have one son, Terry and one daughter, Pamela Astrup as well as five grandchildren. Looking back on a full life Mr. Peet says, "My greatest reward is my family." On June 20, 2018 the Peets celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary.
