Mr. Borges has had a rewarding career in the environmental field. His interest in the area was piqued while serving in the U.S. Army during the early stages of the environmental movement. Mr. Borges was excited that the public was finally paying attention to environmental issues and was ready to take action.
When he left the Army, Mr. Borges obtained a Bachelor of Art in geography and went on to serve as an environmental planner for the Mendocino County Planning Department in Ukiah, California. He also later obtained a Master of Business Administration from the University of Phoenix. While working for Mendocino County, Mr. Borges managed to stop a formaldehyde production plant from dumping formaldehyde fumes into a valley occupied by about 10,000 people.
In addition, Mr. Borges served as the technical project manager for the Denver metropolitan region clean water and air programs, which were recognized by the President's Council on Environmental Quality. Mr. Borges is also proud to have developed a teaching program on sustainability management for the Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District, where mid-career professionals were taught how to enact green revolutions within their organizations. Mr. Borges also led the Orange County Sustainability Collaborative and maintains affiliation with Mensa International.
Throughout his career and in his life, Mr. Borges has had various mentors, including his parents, his music director Donald Porter, Sgt. Maj. Joseph Canel, Commanding Officer Maj. Gerald Evans, and many close personal associates and friends who supported and encouraged him. Today, Mr. Borges continues to share his expertise in his industry as a mentor for the Orange County Scholar Selection Committee of the TGR Foundation, and as a Grand Awards judge in the Environmental Engineering category of the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair.
