A retired elementary and high school teacher of more than 40 years, Ms. Jones most recently taught as a piano teacher at the Windsor Village Liberal Arts Academy in Houston between 1994 and 2005. Dedicating more than three decades as a teacher of the gifted and talented and third and fourth grade teacher who also served as a district teacher trainer at the Houston Independent School District, she began her career as an English and typing teacher at Lincoln High School in Port Arthur, TX, in 1961.
Actively involved in education, Ms. Jones was a shared decision member for the School of Decision Making Team, coordinator of the gifted and talented program at Petersen Elementary School in Houston, participant in piano at the Recital Hartzog Studio and film previewer for the Houston Media Center. She served as a curriculum writer for "Modules to Improve Science Teaching" in 1985, was the author of a science pop-up book in 1980 and contributed several poems to literary journals during her tenure. In 2010, she authored a children's book, "Poetic Treasures," which received a Barnes & Noble Award, as well as a second children's book, "Adam's Atomic Squirrel."
Active in her local community as a volunteer with her local worship center, youth camp, alumni association, and other community service organizations, Ms. Jones was known for having co-chaired the Rosa Parks Commission, serving as the founding sponsor for the Martin Luther King Junior National Memorial Project Foundation, Inc., in 2006, serving on the USA Olympic Committee in 2009 and for being active with numerous other organizations over the years. A longstanding member of multiple professional organizations, including the National Education Association, the Houston Association of Childhood Education, where she served three years as vice president, the Association for Childhood Education, where she served as a member of the board of directors for 12 years, and the National Storytelling Association, Ms. Jones is also a lifetime member of the Tejas Storytelling Association, the Texas Retired Teachers Association and the International Society of Poets, where she received a Silver Cup Award for Outstanding Poetry Achievement in 2003.
Ms. Jones has been the recipient of multiple awards and recognitions throughout her career as well. More recently, she was named a 2015 Living Legends Honoree by the Blue Triangle Multi-cultural Association, Inc. She also received an Outstanding Community Service Plaque from the Houston-Harris County Retired Teachers Association in 2011, Humanitarian Trophy in 2005, and an Editor's Choice Award from the National Library of Poetry in 1995. Named to the International Poetry Hall of Fame, she has been highlighted in more than 50 editions of Who's Who, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who of American Women. Married to her husband Waldo D. Jones since 1965 and the mother of three children, she is a native of Texas who holds a Bachelor of Science and Master of Education from Prairie View Agricultural and Mechanical University.
