Dr. Paik is a medically trained gynecologist and medical educator who has taught as a full-professor in the College of Medicine at Gyeongsang National University for the past 24 years. First hired on campus as vice dean of the College of Medicine in 1987 and vice director of the Gyeongsang National University Hospital in 1994, has since served as vice president of the faculty of Gyeongsang National University in 2002 and 2003, dean of the College of Medicine from 2003 to 2005, and as the head and chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology for 26 years. Dr. Paik also served as a Fogarty International Fellow in the Endocrinology and Reproduction Research Branch, National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, National Institutes of Health (NIH) from 1992 to 1994, and he was a visiting researcher in the James Graham Brown Cancer Center Hormone Receptor Laboratory at the University of Louisville School of Medicine in 1988.
Dr. Paik began his career by first earning an MD at Seoul National University College of Medicine. He completed an internship, residency, and fellowship with the school from 1979 to 1984, and he obtained a master's degree in 1983 and a PhD in 1987. Dr. Paik has since made a great contribution to the development of newly-established Medical College at Gyeongsang National University, especially in medical education, developed into school with advanced well-organized curriculum. He later returned to his studies at Korea National Open University, earning a BA in Chinese Language and Literature in 2004, a BA in Japanese Studies in 2006, a BA in Tourism in 2009, a BA in Media Arts and Sciences in 2013, a BS in Agricultural Sciences in 2015, a BA in Economics in 2017, followed by a MA in Japanese Language and Culture at Korea National Open University Graduate School in 2018. Dr. Paik is recognized as a Diplomate of the Korean Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Renowned for performing the first in-vitro fertilization and embryo transfer at Gyeongsang National University Hospital in Gyeongsangnam Province, Dr. Paik is the author of the 1997 book 'Obstetrics", the 2007 book 'Gynecology', the 2012 book 'Gynecologic Endocrinology' and the author and editor of 'Chronic Pelvic Pain' in 2013. He has contributed many articles to various scholarly journals in his area of expertise as well. Currently serving as a board member for the Korean Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the Korean Society of Gynecologic Endocrinology, the Korean Society of Menopause, the Korean Society for Assisted Reproduction, and the Korean Society for Fertility Preservation, Dr. Paik is also an active member of the Korean Society for Reproductive Medicine, the Korean Society of Chronic Pelvic pain, the Korean Society of Contraception and Reproductive Health, the Korean Society of Endometriosis, and the Korea Medical Association.
The recipient of a 1983 Academic Award from the Korean Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Dr. Paik received International Research Fellowship from the NIH in 1992, first prize poster from the American Society for Reproductive Medicine in 2008, and a Presidential Honor Award from the Korean Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology in 1987 and the Gyeongsang National University in 2015.
Outside of his medical and teaching career, Dr. Paik is a first class amateur radio operator, certified by the Ministry of Information and Communication, Republic of Korea. He is a instructor for the Korean Amateur Radio League, former director of the Jinju Bureau of the Korean Amateur Radio League, and chief of the Amateur Radio Station in the College of Medicine at Gyeongsang National University. Notably, he received WAC award from the International Amateur Radio Union in 1998. Dr. Paik is currently a member of the Jinju Saxophone Club, participated in Tongyoung International Music Festival fringe performance as a master of ceremony and saxophonist of Jinju Saxophone band from 2009 to 2011, and received Rising Star Band award in 2011. Married since 1976 to his wife Sang Hyun Han with two children Eyun and Esun, Dr. Paik has been cited in the 33rd edition of Who's Who in the World.
