Dr. Birns has been an associate professor of humanities at The Center for Applied Liberal Arts at New York University since 2016. In his position, he currently teaches two courses, The First World War and British Fiction: Ford Madox Ford's Parade's End, and From Ballad to Rock and Roll: Song and Poetry. A member of the university's faculty since 1995, he formerly served as a faculty member of the College of New Rochelle between 1996 and 2002, teaching composition and literature courses in a multicultural and digital context. Dr. Birns has continued to lecture at the New York Society Library since 2013, teaching courses in 20th century and contemporary literature to adults.
During his career, Dr. Birns spent time as a visiting professor at the University of International Business and Economics in Beijing, China, and Sichuan University in Chengdu, China, as a visiting assistant professor at Western Connecticut State University, invited lecturer at the University of Stockholm, visiting fellow at the University of Wollongong in Australia, and visiting research fellow at the University of Newcastle Australia. He also dedicated one year as a rector-funded visiting fellow at the Australian Defense Force Academy in 2014.
A reading advocate who is passionate about teaching others, Dr. Birns says that for some people, reading is just a pleasure, but for him, it has always been a technique that he can communicate well to others. Equally enthusiastic about the art of writing, Dr. Birns has authored and edited numerous publications over the years. In 2004, he authored "Understanding Anthony Powell," followed by "Theory after Theory: An Intellectual History of Literary Theory from 1950 to the Early Twenty-First Century" in 2010 and "Barbarian Memory: The Legacy of Early Medieval History in Early Modern Literature" in 2013. Noting that his 2010 book was the most important to him, "Theory after Theory" involved a very difficult subject that included exploring more than 50 years of recent literary theory. The book has since been adopted as a textbook at various locations. Dr. Birns plans to continue writing books that bring together his various interests. Dr. Birns is the editor of "Antipodes: A Global Journal of Australian/NZ Literature" and the co-editor of "A Companion to Australian Literature Since 1900."
A member of the Commission on Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs with the Episcopal Diocese of New York since 2010 and member of the campus ministry committee since 2011, Dr. Birns formerly served as secretary and treasurer of the Council of Editors of Learned Journals (CELJ) and as a board member of the Lower East Side Project for the Arts. He is also active as a member and former president of the Guild of Scholars of Episcopal Church and is a member of The Church Club and the Modern Language Association.
Dr. Birns earned a Bachelor of Arts at Columbia University in 1988 and Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy at New York University (NYU) in 1990 and 1992, respectively. He was the recipient of a Development Fellow by NYU from 1988 to 1989 and an Honor Award from the CELJ. In addition, he was a two-time semi-finalist for the Distinguished University Teaching Award from The New School in 2011 and 2012. Dr. Birns has been cited in every edition of Who's Who in America since 2000, as well as several editions of Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who in the World.
