An expert in photonics and the science of light and considered by many as the "father of silicon photonics," Dr. Soref's career in basic and applied research spans more than 50 years.
BOSTON, MA, August 02, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Richard A. Soref, PhD, with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Soref celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
A research professor of engineering at the University of Massachusetts for the past seven years, Dr. Soref previously spent 28 years as a research scientist with the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory on Hanscom Air Force Base as well as nearly 20 years as a technical staff member with the Sperry Research Center. He additionally contributed to the Lincoln Laboratory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on the technical staff. An expert in photonics and the science of light and considered by many as the "father of silicon photonics," Dr. Soref's career in basic and applied research spans more than 50 years.
Initially inspired by the fields of science, engineering and materials in his youth, Dr. Soref acquired a radio license to become the youngest amateur radio operator in Wisconsin at the age of 13. During his career, he has contributed more than 550 peer-reviewed papers, authored chapters in eleven books and served on the editorial board of Optical Engineering. He holds 54 U.S. patents. His work includes the invention of opto-electronic integration on silicon, significant contributions to SiGeSn material development and, since 1985, visionary, fundamental contributions to the science and technology of silicon photonics. Optical communications and sensing technology were also advanced by Dr. Soref's innovations in waveguide-circuit integration, photonic crystals, nonlinear optics, laser physics, plasmonic-photonics, microwave photonics and infrared detection.
Active with multiple committees and organizations relative to his work, Dr. Soref founded the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) International Group IV Photonics Conference in 2004, which later granted him with a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2010. A Life Fellow of IEEE, he is also an Elected Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors, the Optical Society of America and the Institute of Physics, among others. He received multiple awards during his tenure as well, including a U.S Air Force Basic Research Award in 1991, Charles E. Ryan Memorial Award from Rome Laboratory in 1988, and several Air Force Office of Scientific Research Star Team Leader Awards between 2005 and 2011. Dr. Soref has been cited in the 63rd edition of Who's Who in America, the 24th and 25th editions of Who's Who in the East and the first edition of Who's Who in Science and Engineering.
Prior to these accomplishments, Dr. Soref earned Bachelor's and Master's degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Wisconsin–Madison, and Doctor of Philosophy in electrical engineering from Stanford University. Married to Galina Chausovsky since January 2006, he is a proud father and grandfather.
