Dr. Steinbaum has been the director of her own gallery, the Bernice Steinbaum Gallery, located in New York since 1977. She has curated numerous exhibitions and traveling museum shows, and has been both a speaker in her field and juror in a number of art shows. During her extensive career, Dr. Steinbaum has also held several teaching positions at institutions such as Hofstra University, Drake University, and the Iowa Public School System.
Prior to this, Dr. Steinbaum earned a Bachelor of Arts from Queens College in 1961 and a Master of Arts from Hofstra University in 1965, where she later taught. She went on to earn a Doctor of Philosophy in art education from Columbia University in 1977, the same year she opened her gallery. Throughout her career, Dr. Steinbaum has been influenced by a number of inspirational women in her life such as Betty Friedan, Gloria Steinem, Miriam Schapiro, Paula Harper, Mary Garrard, Linda Nocklin and Norma Broude.
Dr. Steinbaum is the host of her own television show in Iowa, titled "Art Time with Mrs. Steinbaum," and has authored one book, titled "The Rocker: An American Design Tradition," in 1992. She has also contributed numerous articles to professional publications, magazines, and newspapers, and has a movie about her life eponymously titled "Bernice," currently available on iTunes. She was a recipient of the Women's Caucus for Art's Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012, and was named Woman of the Year by the National Organization of Women in 1988. In addition to these honors, Dr. Steinbaum also received an award from Pinecrest gardens and in 2018 she will be honored at the Heart in Hand awards for her lifetime of work as an advocate and dealer to women and artists of color. She has been listed in several editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the East, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, Who's Who in the World, and Who's Who of American Women.
