A fourth generation academic, Dr. Paksoy retired in 2011 as a history instructor at Baker College in Flint, MI, after 24 successful years in the classroom. Teaching in various institutions across the country during his tenure, including the University of Massachusetts, Ohio State University and Texas Tech University, he remained true to his passion, exclusively teaching history to students. During his years at Texas Tech University, Dr. Paksoy not only taught, but was also responsible for archiving, which has been online since approximately 2003. He also served as a faculty associate in the Center for Middle Eastern Studies at Harvard University in Cambridge, MA, between 1986 and 1994.
A subject that is filled with lessons, as Dr. Paksoy explains, is not just the understanding of the past but also teaches us as a society how to deal with the future. Throughout his career, he not only loved to teach the subject but also write about it. In 1989, he authored "Alpamysh: Central Asian Identity under Russian Rule." He has since authored and edited over 25 other academic books and novels, including a trilogy, "Son of Sun," and authored articles in various peer-reviewed journals. Dr. Paksoy recently began working on his eleventh novel in 2018.
A consultant for NBC News in Moscow, The Economist in London and Voice of America in Washington, DC, among others, Dr. Paksoy is a longstanding member of the Association for the Advancement of Central Asian Research, Inc. He is a founding editor of the organization's bulletin, former founding president and member of the executive council since 1990. He is also active with the Association for Slavic, East European and Eurasian Studies, the American Historical Association and the Association for Asian Studies, among several other professional organizations, and was the founder of the Connecticut branch and former honorary secretary of the Oxford Society.
Locally involved, Dr. Paksoy co-founded the telecommunications project at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children in Dallas, TX. He was also the chairman of the youth service committee and the world community service committee for the Park Cities Rotary Club. He is currently an amateur radio operator for N9MI.
Dr. Paksoy holds a Bachelor of Science from Trinity University, Master of Arts from the University of Texas, and a Doctor of Philosophy from Oxford University in England. He has been the recipient of several grants from such organization as the Japanese Ministry of Education and the National Science Foundation. He has been cited in several editions of Who's Who in America and Who's Who in the East as well.
