Currently a professor of sociology at Wheaton College, Dr. Allen has more than 30 years of experience in academia. Having previously served as an associate professor of sociology at Calvin College and the Rochester Institute of Technology, he held a similar role at Wheaton from when he joined its faulty in 1998 until 2006. Dr. Allen was also a sociology instructor and administrative assistant to the president at Bethel College from 1982 to 1987.
While in elementary school, a young Dr. Allen looked to Albert Einstein for inspiration. While the renowned physicist made history in the natural sciences, he hoped to have a significant impact in the social sciences field. He has accomplished this as a member of the Athens Institute for Educational Research, through which he wrote a paper on scientific literacy that was distributed to and accepted by thousands of scholars worldwide. He has also visited Oxford University twice, presenting papers and engaging in thought-provoking discussions with like minds. In addition to his work with the Behavioral Science Unit of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Dr. Allen was a consultant analyst for the National Education Association for 25 years.
Dr. Allen has contributed nearly 40 articles to industry-related journals and delivered presentations to numerous professional groups. He also participated in the World Congress of Sociology in 2014 and 2018 and has been affiliated with the Institute for Black Family Development since 1984. Dr. Allen is a member of the International Sociological Association and a former member of the DuPage Federation on Human Services Reform, which aims to identify ways to improve human services in a number of communities.
The recipient of a Bachelor of Arts, cum laude, from Wheaton College, Dr. Allen also holds a Doctor of Philosophy and Master of Arts from the University of Chicago. He has been actively involved in his community as a member of the African-American Leadership Roundtable of DuPage County, the Kettering Foundation Community Leadership Program, and the board of directors of Genessee Settlement House.
