Prior to these appointments, he served the Boston Harbor Islands NPS Partnership as partner representing the Advisory Council from 1996 to 2000 and again 2015 to the present, Hampshire College as a major gifts officer from 1999 to 2003, on the Board of Directors for the Cambridge School of Weston from 1987 to 1994, and the Peabody Essex Museum as a natural history curator from 1984 to 1992. Also having held the titles of education curator at the New England Aquarium, executive director of the Discovery Museums, elementary science teacher at the Pike School, seventh grade science teacher at Jaffrey Rindge Middle School, and assistant scientist for the Sea Education Association. Dr. Moir began his career as an environmental educator for Habitat Institute for the Environment from 1975 to 1978 and as a founding member of the Massachusetts Environmental Education Society.
Before embarking on his professional path, Dr. Moir pursued an education at the Cambridge School of Weston, earning a Diploma in 1975. He continued his academic efforts with a Bachelor of Arts in natural sciences in 1977 at Hampshire College. Following these accomplishments, he obtained a Master of Science in teaching and environmental management at Antioch University as well as certification in ecology from the Marine Biological Laboratory in 1979. Dr. Moir returned in 1996 to completed his studies at Antioch University in 2002 with a Doctor of Philosophy in environmental studies.
Beyond his responsibilities within the field, Dr. Moir has participated in numerous endeavors in his professional circles. He has contributed to the National Marine Educators Association as president from 1999 to 2000 and as director from 1984 to 1986 and from 1995 to 200l. He has also found much the success with Boston's Save the Harbor/Save the Bay, serving on their Board of Directors from 1992 to 2000 and as president from 1994 to 2000. Dr. Moir has also held the roles of general operating grants reviewer for the Institute of Museums and Library Services from 1993 to 1995, council member for the Association of Children's Museums in 1994, science literacy task force member for the Massachusetts Cultural Council in 1993, president of the Essex County Ornithological Club from 1986 to 1994, and president of the Gulf of Maine Marine Educators Association from 1984 to 1985.
In addition to his primary trade, Dr. Moir remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to his areas of expertise. He has been active on the Advisory Council for the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary as well as chair for the Advisory Council for Boston Harbor Islands National Recreation Area. He has also maintained involvement as the president of the Salem Sound Harbor Monitors and the Salem Sound 2000. Likewise, Dr. Moir has been a member of Massachusetts Marine Educators, the Orion Society, the Society for Conservation Biology, and the Somerville Armory Pub Sing.
In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Moir has accrued several accolades throughout his impressive career. He was recognized as an Environmental Fellow of the Robert and Patricia Switzer Foundation in 1996. Furthermore, he was presented with a James Centorino Award for Distinguished Performance in Marine Education from the National Marine Educators Association in 1988 and the Rockefeller Brothers Fund Award for the Development of a College Course on Cetacean Biology, Ecology, and Conservation in 1976. Most recently, Dr. Moir has been honored by Worldwide Branding many times, having been featured in the 2017 Calendar Series and 2018 edition of Marquis Magazine, as a 2017 Industry Expert, as a Distinguished Worldwide Humanitarian in 2013, 2015, and 2017, as Professional of the Year in 2010, 2015 and 2016, and in the 2011 and 2015 editions of Pro-Files Magazine.
