Dr. Daniel taught as a professor of communication education and director of speech education at East Central University for 29 years, becoming a professor emeritus in 2010. A Linscheid distinguished professor from 2006 to 2010, he also contributed to organizing the Ada High School Interact Club and the East Central University Rotaract Club, serving as district chair for both organizations. He also served on the 4-Way Test Speech Contest committee for several years. Prior to entering academia, Dr. Daniel spent 9 years as a high school teacher, first at Missouri Valley Public Schools, then at Clinton Public Schools, both located in Iowa.
Earning an Associate's degree at Iowa Lakes Community College, Bachelor's degree at Morningside College, Master's at the University of Iowa and Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Nebraska, Dr. Daniel also served three years as a first lieutenant in the United States Army from 1968 to 1971. Active in his field, he has since become a member of the American Association of University Professors, the Association of Teacher Educators and the International Communications Association, among others. Dr. Daniel has also served as president and executive director of the Oklahoma Speech Theater Communications Association where he received an Outstanding Communications Educator Award in 1985, a Josh Lee Service Award in 1992 and a Speech Award for Contributions to Profession in 1994.
Dr. Daniel has also served as president of the Ada Rotary Club and on the Rotary Leadership District Team for several years as the chair of the Interact Committee and as chair of the Rotaract Committee. He earned a 1996 Paul Harris Fellowship, and is a now a member of the Paul Harris Society. Dr. Daniel was also twice named Rotarian of the Year. More recently, he was recognized by Rotary International as a Major Donor in 2016.
A lifetime member of the Central States Communication Association, he was the organization's Executive Director from 1994 to 1997 and President from 1999 to 2000. Dr. Daniel was later inducted into the Central States Communication Hall of Fame in April 2010 in Cincinnati, Ohio as the very first person to be inducted while still a full-time college faculty member.
Dr. Daniel was also very active on several committees at the national level to establish standards and competencies for speaking, listening and media literacy for students from kindergarten to grade 12 and helped write two books for teachers to show them how to teach the standards and competencies. He is the co-author of "Project Text for Public Speaking," and has presented at numerous state, regional and national conventions as well. He was honored with a Teacher Excellence Award from East Central University in 1995.
Showcased in every edition of Who's Who in America since 2000, as well as many more editions of Who's Who in the South and Southwest and Who's Who in the World, Dr. Daniel has an adopted son, Lam Dinh, who he took under his wing several years ago.
