Mr. Zitrin is a longtime practicing attorney who has maintained his own practice, Zitrin Law Office, in San Francisco since 1984, and from 1975 to 1984 with the San Francisco and Marin County law firm of Mayer & Zitin. An expert trial lawyer who is a California certified specialist in malpractice and legal ethics, he has been teaching legal ethics at the University of California, Hastings College of Law for the past 24 years. From 1977 through 2005, he taught at the University of San Francisco School of Law, where he was the founder and first director of the Center of Applied Legal Ethics. Mr. Zitrin also served as of counsel for Carlson, Calladine & Peterson of San Francisco, CA for six years.
During his tenure, Mr. Zitrin has chaired the California State Bar Committee on Professional Responsibility and Conduct, consulted with and helped draft legislation for many members of the California State Senate and Assembly and several members of the United States Senate, and served as a visiting lecturer at law schools at Fordham University (for several years), Lewis & Clark, and Hofstra University, among others. He is a member of the American Bar Association, which honored him in 2006 with its Pro Bono Publico Award. He is active with the Bar Association of San Francisco, where he has served on its Board of Directors, and as chair of a number of committees. A board member for Ventura Vie, a non-profit group that supports women's rights, Mr. Zitrin is also the president of the Arthur & Charlotte Zitrin Foundation, a non-profit organization he formed in San Francisco.
The lead author of three books, author of many scholarly articles, and a periodic column called "The Moral Compass" for American Law Media, Mr. Zitrin is currently writing two trade books and has just completed a fifth edition of his legal ethics textbook, due out in 2018. He is the recipient of many awards including the Larry Long Award from the California State Bar, three Awards of Merit from the San Francisco bar, and numerous other awards regarding his pro bono work and as a champion of diversity and equality. He holds his undergraduate degree from Oberlin College and a Doctor of Jurisprudence from New York University, and is admitted to practice in California and New York.
Born in Brooklyn, NY, Mr. Zitrin was a teacher and political operative prior to law school. He moved to San Francisco in 1973, worked on a multiple-court murder case while finishing his juris doctorate, and then practiced criminal law, becoming a certified specialist. Married to his wife Victoria Amba, he has three children and two grandchildren, and loves spending quality time with his family. He also loves playing the saxophone and basketball, watching movies and eating at his favorite Italian restaurant. Notably, Mr. Zitrin has been included in several editions of Who's Who in America and Who's Who in American Law.
