Dr. Karlow holds a Bachelor of Science from Walla Walla University, and a Master of Science and a Doctor of Philosophy from Washington State University. His interest in the field of physics was initially piqued by his high school physics teacher, who occasionally let him teach the class while he was out of town. In addition, during his undergraduate and graduate studies, Dr. Karlow was mentored by many of his professors. One mentor in particular, his Ph.D. thesis advisor John Gruber, took him on as an advisee to assist in teaching a college level physics class, which gave him an opportunity to study under someone who was very interested in teaching. Although Dr. Karlow has always enjoyed conducting research, developing other people's goals and improving his own teaching methods has also been a continuing aspiration throughout his career. After obtaining his doctorate, Dr. Karlow began his career as an associate professor of math and physics at Columbia Union College in Takoma Park, MD. Throughout his career, Dr. Karlow has served as a physics professor at multiple universities and as a consultant for Merlan Scientific Ltd.
Civically, Dr. Karlow served as the chairman of the board of trustees at La Sierra Academy and Elementary School in Riverside, CA. He also authored an industry text and has contributed to a number of physics and philosophy of physics articles. Dr. Karlow's professional achievements include the development of the computer interfaces Champ and Nuclear Champ. In addition, during his years as an accreditation liaison officer, he found that in the accreditation manual for Western Association of Schools and Colleges, there was nothing that would run contrary to the best practice that any institution would like to achieve. He subsequently made it his goal to translate that finding into practical terms for his colleagues. As a testament to his professional achievements, Dr. Karlow was awarded frequently for his excellence in teaching and faculty governance at La Sierra University, where he taught for three decades. Today, in order to remain aware of developments in his field, Dr. Karlow maintains membership with the American Physical Society and the American Scientific Affiliation.
