Today, Hendrik Edelman holds the title of professor emeritus of library and information sciences at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey.

Mr. Edelman was born and raised in the Netherlands, where he began his career in international publishing and bookselling with Martinus Nijhoff Publishers & Booksellers. While with the booksellers, he was able to travel to universities in the United States and Canada selling European books and periodicals. He moved to the United States in 1967, where he obtained a Master of Library Science from Peabody College (now Vanderbilt University).
Throughout his career, he served as university bibliographer at Vanderbilt University, assistant director of libraries at Cornell University, and university librarian at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. Subsequently, he taught for many years at the Rutgers School of Communication and Information. Today, he holds the title of professor emeritus of library and information sciences at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. Mr. Edelman attributes his success to several mentors, including Wouter Nijhoff, president of Martinus Nijhoff Publishers & Booksellers, and David Kaser, the director of the library at Vanderbilt University as well as at Cornell University.
In addition to his practical work in the field, Mr. Edelman also wrote several monographs about international publishing, and library and information science. He also contributed numerous articles and reviews to various professional journals. He served as chairman of the advisory board of the Book Industry Study Group and the Rutgers Institute for Jazz Studies, and was chairman of the education committee of the Netherland-America Foundation.
As a testament to his professional accomplishments, Mr. Edelman has received the Distinguished Service Award from the New Jersey Library Association, the Resources Section Award from the American Library Association, and was inducted into the International Library and Information Studies Honor Society. Mr. Edelman maintains affiliation with the Bibliographical Society of America, the American Antiquarian Society and the New-York Historical Society.
