Dr. Ricketts holds a Bachelor of Science, a Master of Science and a Doctor of Philosophy, all from Ohio State University. He began his career as a livestock extension specialist in the department of animal sciences at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Two years later, they began to specialize and he picked up responsibility for the sheep extension program and the Illinois beef performance testing program. The last 12 years before retirement, he was the sheep extension specialist and the extension program leader in the department. In addition, the last seven years of his career and his first two years of retirement, he taught sheep production on campus. Throughout his career, Dr. Ricketts also judged sheep shows at county fairs, state fairs and national shows. He also contributed his expertise to the field in articles to professional journals and livestock publications, and he wrote several extension publications.
Civically, Dr. Ricketts has been an active leader in Little League baseball, 4-H clubs, and in his local church's Bible study group and retirement community. He was recently president of the Homeowners Association. He also served in the Army National Guard for six years, including six months of active duty. As a testament to his professional achievements, Dr. Ricketts has received many awards from several organizations and institutions throughout his career. Most notably, for the amount of help he provided livestock producers, he received the Extension Award from the American Society of Animal Science in 1984, which he cites as a crowning moment in his career as an animal scientist.
