After suffering from polio, spinal meningitis and other serious illnesses, Dr. DiBenedetto was inspired to pursue the field of biomedical engineering. Upon graduating from the City College of New York with a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering, he began working for Union Carbide Corporation. Subsequently, Dr. DiBenedetto returned to college, earning a Master of Science in Chemical Engineering and a Doctor of Science in Chemical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin.
With experience and education behind him, Dr. DiBenedetto honed his skills through various roles at the University of Wisconsin, Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri and the University of Connecticut, where he retired with Emeritus status in 1997.
In subsequent years, he has served in Italy as a Visiting Professor at The University of Trento and at The University of Napoli, and has participated in joint research programs with colleagues at The Polytechnical University in Brno, Czech Republic, and at the Technion University in Haifa, Israel.
Throughout his career, Dr. DiBenedetto and his collaborators were able to achieve great success in the rebuilding of human blood vessels and organs, before and after the development of present day computer sciences, using well known Basic design techniques utilized by industries in the 1960's and 70's and after the development of present-day Computer Aided Design and Computer Aided Manufacturing techniques.

He has also has received a Distinguished Service Award from the University of Wisconsin, a Professional Development Award from the National Science Foundation and an Educational Service Award from the Plastics Institute of America.
The International Biographical Center named him one of 2,000 Outstanding Intellectuals of the 21'st Century.
