Now retired after an impressive career lasting more than 45 years, Dr. Hansel most recently served as senior engineering associate for Air Products and Chemicals, Inc., a manufacturer of industrial gases. While at Air Products he was a leader in the field of safety and risk analysis of the manufacture and application of industrial gases. Prior to that role, he was a manager of new catalyst evaluation for the BASF Corporation, a research engineer for Exxon Research, and a member of the research faculty at Princeton University. During his long industrial career, he was also an adjunct associate professor at Columbia University, a visiting professor of chemical and mechanical engineering at The Pennsylvania State University, and a visiting lecturer in mechanical engineering at his alma mater, Stevens Institute of Technology. Relying on his advanced knowledge and breadth of experience in the industry, he has been a consultant on engineering safety working with major corporations for more than 30 years.
Dr. Hansel was on the founding board of directors for American on Wheels, an automotive museum in Allentown, Pennsylvania, from 1998 to 2007. He also served on the industrial and professional advisory council at Penn State's College of Engineering from 1996 to 1998. He is a member of the advisory council of the Lehigh Valley Hospital Network's Center for Connected Care and Innovation, and he has helped advance career and technical education for future generations while an advisor to Lehigh Career and Technical Institute. His enthusiasm for career and technical education began with his early childhood experience on the Home Front during World War II. He often aided his father, who was an automotive technology high school teacher, in carrying out the vital role of keeping automobiles running in wartime. This enthusiasm was further enhanced by the education that he received from the renowned Brooklyn Technical High School.

He also holds eight patents. Other achievements include playing a prominent role in the development of the three-way conversion exhaust gas catalyst and automotive engine control system used in almost two billion cars all over the world. The Society of Automotive Engineers recognized this exhaust gas catalyst and engine control system as one of the ten most significant developments in the history of the automobile. He was the first to apply hydrogen industry safety practices to hydrogen-powered vehicles, including a founding membership on the U.S. Department of Energy Hydrogen Safety Review Panel. He also developed and implemented a course that taught hydrogen safety to automotive engineers globally. Dr. Hansel is a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the International Standards Organization, the New York Academy of Sciences, Sigma Xi and Tau Beta Pi.
