With nearly 50 years of industry experience to his credit, Mr. Schaefer has worked as a professor for the Wayne County Community College District since 2003. Prior to this appointment, he served Washtenaw Community College as professor from 1999 to 2003, Comparative Studies in Society and History as senior editor from 1988 to 1999, and Shining Waters Press as publisher and editor from 1974 to 1988. Previously, he held the positions of freelance writer, editor and researcher in Ann Arbor, MI, from 1970 to 1974. Mr. Schaefer began his career as a regional editor for Muskegon Chronicle from 1969 to 1970.
Before embarking on his professional path, Mr. Schaefer pursued an education at Grand Rapids Community College, earning an Associate of Arts in English in 1965. He continued his academic efforts with a Bachelor of Arts in English and writing at Michigan State University in 1970. Following these accomplishments, he received a Master of Arts in teaching and writing, summa cum laude, and a Master of Arts in communications, summa cum laude, at Eastern Michigan University in 2005 and 2007, respectively. Mr. Schaefer is currently concluding his studies at the University of Phoenix to complete a Doctor of Philosophy in higher education since 2010.
Beyond his responsibilities within the field, Mr. Schaefer has participated in numerous endeavors outside of his professional circles. He contributed to Wayne County Community College District as a consultant from 2003 to 2004, Orchard Radio as coordinator from 2000 to 2002 and as co-founder in 1999, and Riprap: The Academic Book TV Program as founder, executive producer, and host since 1997. He has held several roles for Eastern Michigan University, including co-chair of the Peace Project Task Force in 2006, on the advisory board for the Eastern Michigan Writing Project, and as an Invited Participant for Research from 2004 to 2006, and a certified writing consultant for the National Writing Project since 2004. Mr. Schaefer was the junior warden and vestry member for Saint Andrew's Episcopal Church from 2000 to 2003.
Mr. Schaefer found success with his writing, having edited such published works as The Magical State: Nature, Money, and Modernity, Food in Global History, and The Construction of Minorities, States of Violence. He has authored "Breathe/Exhale" and produced the video "Falling Leaves." Moreover, Mr. Schaefer was a consultant on Two Dreams in One Bed: Empire, Social Life, and the Origins of the North Korean Revolution in Manchuria.
In addition to his primary trade, Mr. Schaefer remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to his areas of expertise. He has maintained involvement as an elected member of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi and an associate member of the National Council of Teachers of English. Mr. Schaefer was also a member of the Academy of American Poets, the American Educational Research Association and the National Communication Association.
In light of his exceptional undertakings, Mr. Schaefer has accrued several accolades and honors throughout his impressive career. In 2002 and 2004, he was recognized in Who's Who Among America's Teachers. Furthermore, Mr. Schaefer was selected for inclusion in many editions of Who's Who in America and Who's Who in the World.
