Dr. Richardson began his career as an instructor of physics at The Johns Hopkins University from 1957 to 1960. From 1963 to 1967, he was an associate physicist at Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, New York, and from 1968 to 1975, he was a physicist in the research division of the Atomic Energy Commission in Washington, D.C. From 1970 to 1971, he was detailed to the office of the Director General of the CERN Laboratory in Geneva, Switzerland. After these appointments, he was Deputy Manager of the Solar Institute Project Office in the Energy Research and Development Administration in Washington, D.C. from 1975 to 1976.
From 1976 to 1979, Dr. Richardson worked as Deputy Director of Program Planning for Basic Energy Sciences with the United States Department of Energy in Washington, D.C. Following this appointment, he became Program Manager of Medium Energy Nuclear Physics with the United States Department of Energy from 1979 to 1990. In 1990, he was also the Acting Assistant Manager for Laboratory Management in the DOE Area Office at Argonne National Laboratory in Lemont, Illinois. Following this opportunity, Dr. Richardson worked as deputy director of the nuclear physics division of the United States Department of Energy from 1990 to 1994.
Before embarking on his professional path, Dr. Richardson received his Bachelor of Science from the University of Nevada in Reno in 1957. He then went on to earn his Doctor of Philosophy from The Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland 1963.
In addition to his career, Dr. Richardson also served in the United States Air Force from 1948 to 1952, where he worked as a Weather Forecaster. Significant assignments included The Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia and Tempelhof Air Base in Berlin, Germany. He has held several notable positions in his civic life as well, being vice president of the Bellport citizens committee in New York from 1965 to 1967, a member of Boyds Civic Association in Maryland from 1977 to 1980, on the board of directors for Boyds Federal Credit Union in Maryland from 1980 to 1983, President of the Montgomery Chamber Orchestra Society from 1984 to 1986, and president of the Board of Directors of Mountain Valley Homeowners Association in Hendersonville, North Carolina from 1997 to 1999. Dr. Richardson is also a member of the American Physical Society, Pi Mu Epsilon, Phi Kappa Phi, and Sigma Xi.
While he was in graduate school at The Johns Hopkins University Dr. Richardson was the co-discoverer of the eta meson, and while at Brookhaven National Laboratory, he was co-discoverer of the omega-minus hyperon. He has also received such prestigious awards as the Exceptional Service Award from the Department of Energy in 1987 and the Herz Gold Medal for First in Graduating Class from the University of Nevada, Reno in 1957. Dr. Richardson has previously been selected for inclusion in the 21st edition of Who's Who in the East.
