As someone whose entire essence is one of love and positivity, Ms. Gunter has made it her life's work to empower others, spreading her wisdom as a spiritual life coach and motivational speaker since 1992. Since 2007, she has served as the training manager of Urgent Inc. in Miami, where her responsibilities include research, staff development and site coordination. She has served as the president of Gunter Developmental Enterprises since 1998. Furthermore, Ms. Gunter founded both the Rites of Passage Youth Empowerment Foundation in 1996, serving as the international executive director for the organization, and the Heart of Africa Holding Corporation, working as the chief executive officer from 1999 to 2009.
Ms. Gunter's roles are expansive, including holding the positions of consultant for Urgent Inc. from 1997 to 2007, vice president for Black Americans of Achievement, Inc., in San Diego from 1994 to 1995, and market analyst for EMCORP – Market Towers in Atlantic City from 1979 to 1983. Furthermore, she worked as an outside plant engineer for New Jersey Bell in Atlantic City from 1979 to 1981, and a traffic engineer for The Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company in Washington, D.C., from 1970 to 1971. In addition to these roles, Ms. Gunter worked for Pacific Bell in San Diego as an account executive from 1991 to 1993 and an outside plant engineer from 1983 to 1993.
She greatly enjoys teaching others, lecturing on women and minorities in engineering and math at Princeton University from 1979 to 1981. Ms. Gunter also spent years working as a mathematics adjunct faculty member at San Diego Community College from 1995 to 1998, Grossmont College from 1992 to 1994 and American University from 1970 to 1971.
Ms. Gunter earned her Bachelor of Arts in mathematical statistics at American University in 1970. Since then, she has completed coursework at San Diego Community College in 1986 as well as coursework in the field of computer science at American University in 1971. Ms. Gunter's certifications include as a Qualtec Total Quality Management Team Leader, Rites Passage Elder Facilitator as well as both a Bell Labs and Western Electric Outside Plant Telecommunications Engineer.
A member of several organizations, Ms. Gunter positively contributes to any project or group in which she has been involved. She is a member of the African American Women's Conference, a San Diego steering committee member of the United Negro College Fund and an honorary member of Sigma Gamma Rho. Ms. Gunter served on the board for such organizations as Stagville State Historic Site from 2006 to 2008, Women on Tour from 1992 to 2003, the Coalition Women's Groups from 1996 to 1997 and as president of the board of the World Beat Cultural Center in Balboa Park, CA, from 1992 to 1993.
Additionally, Ms. Gunter was a member of the American Humanics Board at the University of San Diego from 1991 to 1994. She was involved with the Class Lead-Leadership Education Awareness Development in 1990 and was a collaborative trustee in the Reuben H. Fleet Science Foundation in 1989. Ms. Gunter was a part of the San Diego Science Foundation from 1989 to 1997, a member of the Atlantic City Urban Area Transportation Commission from 1982 to 1983 and the board directors' lead for the Atlantic City Transportation Authority from 1981 to 1982.
Ms. Gunter's extensive work has not gone unnoticed, as she received a number of awards. Her accolades include the African American Cultural Center's Women of Note Certificate of Distinction in 1999, the Atlantic County Commissioner on Women to Women's and Girls' Award for Rites of Passage in 1998, the California State 79th Assembly Certificate of Recognition, the California State Resolution Honor in 1997 and the Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition in 1997. A distinguished education executive, communications executive, marketing professional and real estate developer, Ms. Gunter has been recognized in several publications, including Who's Who in Finance and Industry, Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in the World, Who's Who in Science and Mathematics, Who's Who in the World, and Who's Who of American Women.
True to her mission of helping others via positivity and knowledge, Ms. Gunter has written many books revolving around knowledge and empowerment. Her works include "Supermath 2000: How to Learn Math Without Fear," "Achieve Goals 2000: A Personal Handbook for the Lifelong Learner," "Living, Learning & Healing Through the Right Use of Your Mind," "A Rite of Passage to Spiritual Enlightenment-Living with Compassion," "Rites of Passage Youth Empowerment Curriculum" and "Thirteen Golden Keys to Learning: A Spiritual Journey." Additionally, Ms. Gunter wrote books which were illustrated by her internationally renowned son, Kadir Nelson.
An accomplished artist, Mr. Nelson has created art for organizations such as Dreamworks, Coca-Cola, Major League Baseball and also created the iconic album artwork for hip-hop and R&B singer Drake's record "Nothing Was the Same." The talented mother-son duo later joined forces, creating "Superlearning 3000: Learning Made Simple," "Superlearning 2000: Learning Made Easy-Everybody Can Learn" and "Superlearning 2000: The New Technologies of Self-Empowerment."
Affecting positive change in her adult life, it should be no surprise Ms. Gunter spread joy since her childhood. As a young girl, she helped her parents, Fay Gaffney Gunter and Verlee Gunter, raise five siblings. Her parents owned a grocery store and were often busy providing for the family, so she took it upon herself to tutor her siblings. Ms. Gunter's excellent attitude and passion for education extended to school, where she was a cheerleader and in the Honor Club.
Often, teachers would ask Ms. Gunter to watch classrooms of students because of her maturity and ability to command a room's attention. When she would enter room students would be standing on their desks but upon seeing her, they would sit in their seats, ready and eager to listen to her. When a teacher would return to the classroom, she would leave, causing the students to misbehave because they wanted her to come back. Her positivity and sheer love for others continues to inspire many. Of her many roles, Ms. Gunter considers teaching the children and teens at Urgent Inc. to be the highlight of her career.
Ms. Gunter had four children with her late husband, Lenwood Melvin Nelson. Their children are Saliha, Kadir, Amin, and Shedia. Her siblings include Elaine Fay, Gaffney Winton, Brian Keith, Darrell Wayne, all Gunter, as well as Olivia Gunter-Morris and Libby Shermaine Gunter-Gary. In her spare time, Ms. Gunter enjoys painting, chess, water aerobics, walking and piano.
