Dr. Vodyanoy is an esteemed biophysicist and educator with more than 40 years of experience to his credit. Serving as a professor in the Department of Anatomy, Physiology and Pharmacology at Auburn University since 1993, he formerly held the role of associate professor at the university from 1989 to 1993 and a research associate at the University of California, Irvine, from 1982 to 1989. Prior to these prominent appointments, he was a senior research scientist at New York University from 1979 to 1982, an associate professor at A.F. Ioffe Physical-Technical Institute from 1972 to 1978, and an assistant professor at the Institute of Semiconductors in Leningrad, Russia, from 1965 to 1972. Likewise, Dr. Vodyanoy has been the director of the Biosensor Laboratory at Auburn University since '1993.
Throughout his tenure, Dr. Vodyanoy has authored more than 100 articles to professional journals and contributed to numerous books as a co-author, including "Membrane Biophysics" in 1971, "Physics of Solid State and Neutron Scattering" in 1974, "The Primo Vascular System" in 2011, and "Morphology and Functional Anatomy of the Mammalian Nasal Cavity" in 2013, among others. In addition, he has been an ad hoc reviewer for the National Science Foundation in Washington, DC, since 1985. The inventor of a device for film deposition, a high resolution microscope, and a method and apparatus for generating a voltage across a membrane, he has also invented an apparatus and method for measurement of aerodynamics of olfaction in animals and mankind. In addition to these achievements, Dr. Vodyanoy invented simultaneous observation of darkfield images and fluorescence using filters and diaphragms, processes for isolating proteon nucleation centers from a biological sample, and methods for detecting misfolded proteins in biological samples, among several others.
Dr. Vodyanoy maintains affiliation with several professional societies, including the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Physical Society, the Biophysical Society, the American Society of Cell Biology and the Society for Neuroscience. Additionally, he is a member of Phi Beta Delta and Phi Zeta. Dr. Vodyanoy has further been the recipient of several grants from such institutions as the U.S. Army Research Office, the University of California, the National Science Foundation, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, the U.S. Air Force, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
In light of his exceptional accomplishments, Dr. Vodyanoy has accrued a number of accolades. The recipient of a Distinguished Fellow Medal by the National Academy of Inventors in 2014, he obtained a Pfizer Award for Research Excellence in 2000, two R&D 100 Awards in 2006 and 2007, a Nano 50 Award in 2007, and a Rice Alliance for Technology and Entrepreneurship Award in 2008. Likewise, Auburn University honored him with a Creative Research Award in 2005 and a B.F. Hoerlein Research Award in 2011. Furthermore, Dr. Vodyanoy was recognized by Auburn University as a Distinguished Graduate Faculty Lecturer in 2005.
Married to Galina Rubin since 1967, Dr. Vodyanoy is the proud father of one daughter, Valerie. Notably, he was selected for inclusion in several editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, and Who's Who in the World.
