Dr. Light has held several teaching positions at Purdue University in Lafayette, IN, since 1965. He began there as an associate professor of chemistry, becoming a full time professor in 1977. He was also chosen as the head of the division of biochemistry in 1978, staying in the position until 1982. In 1992, he retired and earned the rank of professor emeritus. Prior to his tenure at Purdue University, he was a postdoctoral fellow at Cornell University from 1955 to 1957. He then worked at the University of Utah as a research instructor from 1957 to 1959 and an assistant research instructor from 1959 to 1963. Soon thereafter, he was an associate professor of biochemistry at the University of California, Los Angeles, until he transferred to Purdue University.
Dr. Light earned a Bachelor of Science from the City College of New York in 1948, and went on to earn a Doctor of Philosophy from Yale University in 1955. In addition to his professional positions, he also went on a sabbatical leave at the National Institutes of Health and has given numerous lectures at national meetings and universities in Europe. He has authored one book, "Proteins Structure and Function," that was published in 1974, and has been an editorial board member for several professional journals, including the Journal of Biological Chemistry from 1982 to 1987, Analytical Biochemistry since 1984, and Protein Expression and Purification since 1990, among several others.
Throughout his career, Dr. Light has been a member of such organizations as the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Chemical Society, the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, the Protein Society and Sigma Xi. He has also been awarded research fellowships with the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. In addition, he has been listed in several editions of Who's Who in America and the 20th edition of Who's Who in the Midwest.
