Amassing nearly 40 years of professional experience, Dr. Lijphart is a renowned political science educator whose accomplishments are vast. Earning the post of research professor emeritus of political science at the University of California, San Diego, in 2000, he previously served at the university as a research professor of political science from 1994 to 2000 and a professor of political science from 1978 to 1994. From 1968 to 1978, he held the position of professor of international relations at Leiden University. Prior to these appointments, Dr. Lijphart was an associate professor of political science at the University of California, Berkeley, from 1968 to 1969, an assistant professor of political science at the University of California, Berkeley from 1963 to 1968, and an instructor in political science at Elmira College from 1961 to 1963.

To prepare for his illustrious career, Dr. Lijphart pursued a formal education at Principia College in 1958, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts. He subsequently attended Yale University, where he earned a Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy in 1959 and 1963, respectively. A contributor of myriad articles to professional journals, Dr. Lijphart is the author of a number of books, including "Thinking about Democracy: Power-Sharing and Majority Rule in Theory and Practice," published in 2008, as well as an editor of several other books, such as "Institutional Design in New Democracies: Eastern Europe and Latin America" in 1996.

Dr. Lijphart has further maintained affiliation with numerous professional organizations, having been a former member of the American Association for Netherlandic Studies, the American Academy of the Arts and Sciences, the Western Political Science Association, and the Midwest Political Science Association. From 1995 to 1996, he was the president of the American Political Science Association, having previously served as the vice president of the International Political Science Association from 1976 to 1977. Additionally, Dr. Lijphart was an executive committee member of the European Consortium for Political Research from 1976 to 1978 and an executive committee and steering committee member of the Council of European Studies between 1982 and 1985.

In light of his exceptional achievements in political science and higher education, Dr. Lijphart has accrued countless accolades throughout his impressive career. He has been deemed a fellow of numerous academic institutions and foundations, including the Helen Dwight Reid Educational Foundation, Yale University, the Institute of Advanced Studies at Australian National University, the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study, the German Marshall Fund of the United States, and the Science Center Berlin. Additionally, Dr. Lijphart was presented with the Ralph J. Bunche Award from the American Political Science Association in 1979, the Hendrik Muller Prize from the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1993, the George Hallett Prize from the American Political Science Association in 1995, 2001, and 2010, and the Johan Skytte Prize from the University of Uppsala in 1997.

Furthermore, Dr. Lijphart received honorary doctorates from the University of Ghent, Queen's University Belfast, Leiden University, and Coventry University. Married to Gisela Meyers since 1988, he is the proud father of two children. Notably, Dr. Lijphart has been highlighted in the 22nd edition of Who's Who in the West, published in 1989.
