Dr. Jensen is a retired professor who taught at St. Mary's College in Indiana for 36 years after briefly teaching as an assistant professor at Wright State University between 1975 and 1979. A trained biologist who also held responsibilities as a biostatistician and botanist during his journey, Dr. Jensen first earned a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Biology at Austin Peay State University in 1970 and 1972, respectively, followed by a Doctor of Philosophy in Botany at Miami University in 1975.
An expert in plant systematics and American oak trees, as an undergraduate Dr. Jensen quickly became intrigued by his field after taking a course called "Plant Taxonomy," taught by E.W. Chester. Learning more and more about plants, he later studied oak trees while pursuing his master's degree, which involved a master's thesis on oak taxonomy and ecology. Once he began working toward his Ph.D. directed by W.H. Eshbaugh, he focused on the techniques of numerical taxonomy, followed by continued projects with colleagues who discovered that the techniques he was using could help them solve the issues they were experiencing with their own projects.
Serving for 27 years as a director for the Greene-Nieuwland Herbarium at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana, Dr. Jensen was also actively involved as a co-chair for the committee on quantitative and evolutionary morphology of Systematics Agenda 2000, was a senior research fellow in the Center for Field Biology at Austin Peay State University, was a visiting scholar in the department of botany at Miami University and served as a panelist on the systematic biology program for the National Science Foundation from 1983 to 1987. Furthermore, he was a guest professor at the University of Notre Dame between 1981 and 2013.
Dr. Jensen served on the executive committee of the American Midland Naturalist Journal at the University of Notre Dame for 20 years and was an associate editor from 1988-2004, was an associate editor of Systematic Botany and a member of the editorial board for Plant Systematics and Evolution. He has been affiliated with multiple professional societies throughout his career as well, including the International Oak Society, where he served on the board of directors, as membership chair and webmaster, and has since become an honorary lifetime member, the American Society of Plant Taxonomists as treasurer, council member and president, and the Indiana Academy of Science as co-chair and member of the program committee for the 1988 annual meeting, member of the Publications Committee, and the Biological Survey Committee, and was elected a Fellow in 1986.
Receiving multiple awards over the years, Dr. Jensen is most proud of receiving the Distinguished Service Award from the America Society of Plant Taxonomists in 1996. Only the second person to have received the award at that time, it was especially meaningful to him. Two other highlights were receiving the College of Science and Engineering Outstanding Teaching Award at Wright State University in 1978 and receiving the Maria Pieta Award for Outstanding Teaching at St. Mary's College in 1997, an annual award made by students and colleagues. He also received grants from the National Science Foundation, Research Corporation, Indiana Academy of Science and the Eli Lilly Foundation during his academic career. Honored in every edition of Who's Who in America since 1994, as well as many more editions of Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Science and Engineering and Who's Who in the Midwest, Dr. Jensen now enjoys studying history and listening to classical music, and he recently began studying genealogy thanks to his wife, Faye Robertson, who first introduced him to the field, and has been his love and inspiration, even his botany field assistant, for over 48 years.
