With more than 55 years of experience to her credit, Dr. Hodges is currently retired, having most recently worked as an associate professor and department chair for Oklahoma Panhandle State University from 2003 to 2007. Prior to this appointment, she held the positions of teacher for Forgan Public Schools from 1990 to 2001 and coordinator for the department of language arts in Jefferson County Public Schools from 1985 to 1989. Previously, she served Colorado State University as an associate professor from 1976 to 1985 and Douglas County High School as a reading teacher from 1970 to 1976. Dr. Hodges began her career as a public school teacher in Forgan, OK, from 1956 to 1966 and Liberal, KS, from 1966 to 1967.
Before embarking on her professional path, Dr. Hodges pursued an education at Oklahoma Panhandle State University, earning a Bachelor of Arts, cum laude, in 1958. She continued her academic efforts with a Master of Arts, cum laude, from the University of Colorado in 1973. Dr. Hodges concluded her studies at the University of Colorado in 1977, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy, cum laude.
Beyond her responsibilities within the field, Dr. Hodges has participated in numerous endeavors outside of her professional circles. A developer of curriculums in reading and language arts for a number of small and rural schools, she has held the roles of accreditation team member for Colorado State University, reviewer and consultant for Macmillan Publishers and Scott Foresman, and advisor and interviewer for Florentine Films from 2008 to 2012. She had further contributed to Ken Burns' "The Dust Bowl" as an advisor, researcher, and featured interviewee in 2012. Dr. Hodges has notably excelled as a presenter for workshops and seminars within her industry.
Dr. Hodges found success with her written works as well, having authored "Improving Reading/Study Skills" in 1979 and "A Resource Guide for Teaching Content Areas" in 1980. A consultant and author for Prentice Hall, Inc., from 1995 to 2005, she has also penned articles for myriad educational publications as well as chapters to "Elements of Literature" in 1991. Dr. Hodges has additionally edited three volumes of "History of Beaver County" between 1970 and 1992 and "Adventures in Literature" in 1993.
In addition to her primary vocation, Dr. Hodges remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to her areas of expertise. She maintained involvement with the American Association of University Women, the International Literacy Association and National Council of Teachers of English. She was also active with the National Rural Education Association as president in 1998 and the Oklahoma Conservation Historical Society as a founding member and on the board of directors. Dr. Hodges was a member of the Western Writers of America, the Colorado Council of the International Reading Association, the Colorado Language Arts Society, PDK International and Delta Kappa Gamma.
In light of her exceptional undertakings, Dr. Hodges has accrued several accolades throughout her impressive career. She was recognized as Citizen of Year by Beaver County, OK, in 1999, a Hall of Fame inductee by the National Rural Education Association in 2008, and a Hall of Fame inductee by the Oklahoma Panhandle State University in 2009. She was presented with the Governor's Award from the state of Oklahoma in 2006, the Leadership Award from the National Council of Teachers of English in 2002, and the Award for Secondary Teaching from the Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence in 1993. Dr. Hodges was selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, Who's Who in the West, Who's Who in the World and Who's Who of American Women.
