An accomplished mathematics researcher, Dr. Wallach has inspired many throughout his career, both teaching and through his research in the field of mathematics. He has been a professor emeritus of mathematics for the University of California, San Diego, since 2011, first serving as a distinguished professor of mathematics at the university from 1989 to 2011. Dr. Wallach has also served as a consultant for the Center for Communications Research in La Jolla, CA, since 1995.
Dr. Wallach has spent two decades of his career with Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, as the Hermann Weyl professor of mathematics from 1986 to 1989 and a professor of mathematics from 1972 to 1986. Dr. Wallach also held the positions of associate professor of mathematics from 1970 to 1972 and assistant professor of mathematics from 1969 to 1970. Additionally, Dr. Wallach previously served as an instructor for the University of California, Berkeley, from 1966 to 1969.
Prior to his career in mathematics, Dr. Wallach attended multiple academic institutions. He began his academic journey at the University of Maryland, earning a Bachelor of Science in 1962. Dr. Wallach also earned a Master of Arts and a Doctor of Philosophy from Washington University in 1963 and 1966, respectively. Dr. Wallach has written and edited multiple works. He has written "Geometric Invariant Theory: Over the Real and Complex Numbers," multiple editions of "Real Reductive Groups," and co-authored "Continuous Cohomology, Discrete Subgroups, and Representations of Reductive Groups." Dr. Wallach has lent his time and talents to other creative works, editing "Mathematics: Theory and Applications" as well as co-editing the journal, Annals of Mathematics. He has also published more than 160 research papers in mathematics and physics.
Dr. Wallach is a member of the American Mathematical Society, serving as bulletin editor from 1995 to 1998 and member council from 1999 to 2002. Dr. Wallach also held membership with the National Mathematics Committee in 1985 and 1992. Recognized for his contributions to the field of mathematics, Dr. Wallach is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a fellow of the American Mathematical Society. He was the recipient of the Linback Award for Research Excellence in 1977 and received a Sloan fellowship from the Alfred Sloan Foundation from 1972 to 1974. Furthermore, Dr. Wallach has been featured in multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the West and Who's Who in the World.
